Only in England

Why is it that in England you can get away with calling a bank "Lloyds".
Seriously I always joked it would be hillarious to make a bank called "Bills Bank" and have people actually use it.

I could NEVER take a company like that seriously. Now if they renamed themselves "Imperial Bank" or something.. sure I can dig it.

Only in England can you call a corporate something so lax, and end up getting away with it.
I guess I am just not used to the name thing. I mean back home if some dude called his furniture store "Ted's" and charged 25% less than United... I would still go to United because it just SOUNDS better.

Lloyd is a very common surname and a quite rare first name over here which is possibly why it doesnt have the same effect on us. Also its part of the banking establishment and you just accept it as as much of an everyday thing as you would say...Macdonalds.

There is also the Lloyds of London insurance market that underwrites most of the worlds insurance policies. I guess that may sound a bit strange too but again its aesthetically normal to us.

Lloyd is not bad, I guess you're not just used to it... There are lots of establishments all over the world use their surname as a sign that they owned that company... And also as a sign of becoming famous and popular...

Depends on what branch of the company you are using. Down here a lot of the branches are still Lloyds and the insurance part certainly is still Lloyds.

Here you go...

Lloyds TSB:started in 1765 by John Taylor and Sampson Lloyd. The TSB part (Trustee Savings Bank) was added when the two businesses merged in 1995.

The bank has offices and owns banks in 30 countries including the Bank of London and South America in Brazil and the National Bank of New Zealand.

Theres far more thats fucked up about England than Lloyds.

it's only western country in the world that you can arrive at being a known terrorist and not only do they let you in, they also give you money to live on while you spread hatred and recruit other motherfuckers to murder people.

How fucked up is that!

there's alot wrong with the the USA but at least they dont knowingly allow people into the country to spread thier fucking vile hatred.

Thats right - I remember when they prevented Cat Stevens from entering a while back - damn musicians - of course previously (in 2001) they allowed him in to sing "Peace Train" at a benefit/memorial for firefighters and policmen.

Sadly the vast majority of the UK agree with you The really stupid thing is the nutters and scroungers get in and ponce off the state for years living on handouts whilst many with genuine reasons get kicked straight back out. Sadly despite election bullshit to make the system better no political party ever seems to

The only reason I can think for changing the name is that it has to be the most butchered name in history.

I have had people spell it: Loyd, Lyod, Llyode, Lyode, Loyde . . . and countless others.

I was thinking of having it legally changed to LLwyd which is an old English version as I recall.

How about the Dutch aviation company called Fokker?
They built a lot of aircraft over the years.

Established in 1919, went bankrupt in 1996, and then was acquired by a company called Stork Aerospace.

So now they're called Stork Fokker. :D

I always thought "Lloyds of London" was an entirely seperate company.

Infact I'm quite sure it is

Was there a big earthquake or something that caused Canada to no longer be part of America?
