11 percent of youth in the U.S. couldn't even locate the U.S. on a map

About 11 percent of young citizens of the U.S. couldn't even locate the U.S. on a map. The Pacific Ocean's location was a mystery to 29 percent; Japan, to 58 percent; France, to 65 percent; and the United Kingdom, to 69 percent.

Particularly humiliating was that all countries were better able to identify the U.S. population than many young U.S. citizens. Within the U.S., almost one-third said that population was between one billion and two billion; the answer is 289 million.

"It gives the sense that there is this Americentric thing going on?that we are big and powerful and have all these people in our country," said John Fahey, President and CEO of the National Geographic Society.

And yet, People come from all over the world to attend our universities. Of course, only the elite students from around the world get that opportunity. The rest just stay home and post on GFY.

What's your point?
All americans are brilliant because you have some good universities there that 99,9% of the population doesn't study in?

Going to a University in the US doesnt seem to help much - I had a recent graduate of a major college with a masters degree in physics come to work with me a few years ago - during a discussion of Alaska for some reason one day, she stated "yep its an island to the west of Canada".
Seems that she had always thought it was an island because the maps always have it in a separate box making it look like its all alone in the Pacific Ocean. Of course this same "honor student" when hearing me talk to a friend about playing old 45s on a record player, asked why you would put a gun on a record player

I have definitely known people to be confused about the relationship between Holland and the NL. Certainly most people here don't know the greatness of Dutch history; especially its contribution to finance.

I love how idiot canadians with low self esteem hunt all day long for this kind of thing.
yes, "thelegacy" you're way smarter than all of america. hahahaha

The National Geographic?Roper 2002 Global Geographic Literacy Survey polled more than 3,000 18- to 24-year-olds in Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Sweden and the United States.

wow! a whole 3,000 people divided by 9 countries? a survey that tried to pull numbers from 333 Americans and extrapolate it to represent 289 million is what idiots bring to the table.

I have no doubt that canadian youth have problems too, I am 44 and have seen a huge decline in the level of education around here too.

Anthony, hate to say it...but I dont even know who you are but good luck in your work and job and try and relax a bit, life is too short to be wasting it on such hatred. This was not meant to be a thread of hate - but as I have always treated my american friends like a friendly family poking fun.

Only 11% of young people? Not to bad.. I wonder what the ages were?

I'm sure you would find the close to the same thing in many countries if it was kids being asked.

from the data:
"Respondents in all countries were administered a geography quiz testing knowledge of current events, international issues, map reading skills, and world geography. Those in the US received a slightly longer quiz"

no, this test wasn't out to prove a point. no, this test wasn't slanted against americans.

Anthony, hate to say it...but I dont even know who you are but good luck in your work and job and try and relax a bit, life is too short to be wasting it on such hatred. This was not meant to be a thread of hate - but as I have always treated my american friends like a friendly family poking fun.
Do you even know your fucking country you stupid fuck?

Vancouver is multicultural. Now you have self esteem issues about Toronto and Vancouver?

Grow the fuck up.

Jay Leno did a Man in the Street segment where he had a rough time finding someone who knew the name of the Vice-President.

Kids these days are more likely to know the names of Paris Hilton's dogs.
