How long before you drop a Sponsor?
I'm just wondering how long you go with a big dip in sales before you drop a sponsor? I was doing quite well and then boom. I went about 6 days without any sales. Wait, on one of those days I did make one sale. It's the same traffic resource, plus I'm actually sending more traffic. I'm either just having a very bad time this past week or something strange is up.
Do you give it a week or more? - Walrus |

Depends on how long the sales had been steady before that? But assuming this is someone youve been pushing for some time - at most a week - is it possible that your surfers are getting tired of seeing the same thing?

I will run a sponsor for three months to see how my traffic converts with them. I will setup a different campaign for different traffic sources I'm sending from. I track the traffic, ctr, and conversion ratio. After that I can tell how my traffic will work with a given sponsor and traffic source. If it drops off alot over a pay period, I will ask the sponsor if my account is ok... at which time the ratios usually return to normal. Which means they must have turned the shave up. I really don't mind if a sponsor shaves but be consistant. If I'm doing 1:500 off tgp traffic and have been for 6 months don't put me at 0:5000+... then when I hit you up, the next day put me back at 1:500

Thanks for the replies. I'd rather not say who the sponsor is until its resolved. I didn't realize that sponsors are open about "turning up the shaver". Why would they turn it up so high on you like that? Was that a mistake? And who's really going to want to stay with a sponsor if they take control over what they want your conversions to be?

I usually give em a couple weeks to get things straight again if its a proven sponsor. Mostly because I am lazy and I hate changing out links when I could be doing something more productive like building more sites.

I'd definately talk to the sponsor... Also look at your YTD stats... check the ratio or the ratio just for all of last month. Is the RATIO close to your current ratio? Expect fluctuations... Say you have a sponsor that is like this:
7/1 - 2 sales 7/2 - 1 sale 7/3 - 4 sales 7/4 - 2 sales 7/5 - 0 7/6 - 0 7/7 - 0 7/8 - 0 7/9 - 0 7/10 - 0 7/11 - 2 sales 7/12 - 1 sale That is PERFECTLY NORMAL... Look at last month, did you have 6 days (even if non-consecutive) last month with zero sales? Now look at more sales on a larger valume of traffic, 7/1 - 56 7/2 - 89 7/3 - 64 7/4 - 23 7/5 - 18 7/6 - 21 7/7 - 27 7/8 - 14 7/9 - 50 7/10 - 67 Notice there was a drop and a ratio here that stayed the same. But this person still made money. What does that tell you? You need more traffic volume. How? Do what you did, only keep doing it more... There is a cycle in most adult webmasters... You get into and do a SHITLOAD of work and make almost nothing, but the immediate excitement of making adult money sustains your shitty return on work provided. So you made $105 in a month, paid for hosting, domain name and Stats Remote and wow, you still have $50 left to take the old lady to Olive Garden... 3 to 4 months later you start making $65 a day. You think wow... cool... you take some time off.. something you haven't done in a long time. You start thinking about quiting the day job... You maybe over spent a little. You are taking your friends out to much... whatever... Two months go by and things are not getting better. You panick... 3 to 4 months later you are doing $150 a day easy.. You quit the day job and go 100% adult. You move it up to $200 a day and take a REAL vacation. You buy a car and a better cell phone. A camera so you can post pics here at GFY. 6 days come along and you ain't making shit. You panic and chew out your sponsors.. talk about how 'somebody' might be shaving and people ask for more info... 5 days and NOTHING and you are going NUTS... You are about the expose the offending bastards... Then... ohh shit... you surf your own shit to the sponsor and find out that your new elite software package is not url-encoding the fucking sponsor id before passing it to another script which enterprets it as its own setting and doesn't pass it during redirection... you fix it... You are making money again... Or something you made in your second month just got picked up by Yahoo and MSN.. (FUCK GOOGLE)... Bamb, you are making $300 a day and don't give a fuck about that sponsor anymore.. oddly enough, the next day it kicks in and you are doing $500 a day... now who is going nutty over spilled shaving cream? |

I'd drop em,
#1 Webmaster Rule: NEVER pay the monthly fee on their ferrari unless you have one yourself. Come on over to adult date link where you'll change that 2 signups a day into 10 and it does not get stale |

I usually drop the sponsor for a few weeks or a month or so and then start pushing them again, to see if things are back to normal.

I send 'em an email to inquire. So far that's never helped me get my sales, back, although once or twice a sponsor has been able to explain where the sales went. (I did have a case in which a bunch of my sales were coming from Google, and all went *poof* when the algorithm changed. Once the sponsor, who had better data than was being shared with affiliates, showed me the referral info, I understood what had transpired.)
If the email doesn't fix the problem (and it never has yet, but it's still good business) I yank most of my links, but I'll usually keep sending a tiny trickle of traffic. Months or years later, I may notice that my trickle is converting again, and then I'll start sending some more traffic. I think "shaving" is probably the explanation of last resort. I had a program owner look me in the eye at Phoenix Forum and tell me that he was just as baffled as I was as to why my conversions went from 1:2000 to 1:24,000 on the same traffic (those are ratios measured over weeks and months, not days). And I believed him, which I may not have done based on his emails. But he's still not getting my traffic back. Most of my troubles like this, though, have been with semi-shitty programs that have lousy stats, poor back-end software, dubious billing, traffic leaks on their signup pages, and the like. It's been very rare for me to see that kind of fluctuation when I work with the pros. Unfortunately, in my niches there are only a few pros, and there's a lot of money to be made from the crappy little programs run by folks who don't know what they are doing. |
