HELP! Please!

Ok...I'm having this problem with all this php shit that I am not familiar with, really, but trying to learn as I go.

Everytime I install something..this time it's smf so I can bridge it with mambo..the files installed from the web admin is showing user "httpd" in my ftp panel instead of my own username..these also happen to be files that I have problems with permissions-they are supposed to be writable, and I have CHMOD'ed them to 777, but when I use the web admin I am getting "You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory is not writable!"

Like I said, I am pretty shaky on php in the first place, and I just don't understand enough about it to know what to do.

Anyone want to hold my hand and walk me through it, please?

Good luck with the script. I can barely work with them myself.
