http://www.sedo.co.uk/links/showhtml...102&language=e

Happened today. Apparently this is the largest recorded sale so far in 2005.

what kind of website would you find at website.com?

I'm guessing a home page with an animated gif as the background and family vacation galleries.

Do most of the domain gurus here think that was a good price to sell at?

I think the domain itself is worth way more than that.

For domain only, $750K USD is an excellent price.

However, if website.com is currently earning decent revenue, the price was likely way too low.

I've had serious offers upwards of $500K USD for CANNABIS.COM domain name package - a site most folks have never heard of with an occurance rate somewhat lower in google than website.com :

# of results in google:

website.com: 293,000
cannabis.com: 171,000

Overture Score:

website.com (with extension): 1006
cannabis.com (with extension): 106 (but has been as high as 1200 or so; Overture is not ranking cannabis.com correctly lately for some unknown reason)

Alexa:

website.com: not ranked - very suprising!
cannabis.com: 62,567

(not that accurate, but most any site with decent traffic will at least have a ranking)

Ron

With development, sure. As a single domain I think thats a fair price. I'm no domain guru, but I think if it could go for more it would have been sold at a much higher price.

You could probably develop a great newbie "get your own website" business going on ... with a great CMS and a bit of imagination ;)
