I agree that it's important to maintain your own database, but it's not necessary to built it completely new from scratch, you'll get a rather good ROI if you just buy a DB and customize it for your needs, just costs $150 and saves you weeks if not months of hard work. It took me on average 2-3 months of daily work (~300 hours of pure work) to built only one database, but even if someone would just build a smaller one it takes at least 1 month, and 1-3 months of your work-time should be worth more than $150
