Actually no. Hinduism DOES speak to the cyclic nature of the universe, and interestingly, most of it's tenents, involving the origins of the universe, conservation of energy, and astrophysics, closely mirror the latest scientific research.

You may be confused by what little you know that refers to re-incarnation, however it's interesting to me that there is research on electric eels, that isn't even recent, that shows that memory is stored in part as an energy field that can survive death of the individual and be transfered to another individual.

1. Religion is man made. If it wasn't, there'd be only one.

2. Ever hear the phrase "don't discuss politics and religion" ? There's a reason for that. They both stem around "belief". Something which, once instilled, is very, very difficult to influence, especially when confronted with a really, really good argument. Kind of like magnetism, one of the strongest forces known to man. Take two people who each "believe" they're right, bring them together and they'll always repel.

3. Oppression has nothing to do with religion. Oppression is an effect caused by a force (words, chains, guns, terror, etc). Religion is just words.

4. Religion is neither good nor bad. Again, it's just words. Individuals ingesting and forming their own beliefs out of those words are good / bad.

psili - Although I partially agree, I think that opressions had numerous causes and some of them are very firmly based on religion - understand I define religion as belief per the OED definition. A set of beliefs can be the foundation of oppression as has been evidenced by numerous "holocausts" over the years - but lets just stay with recent events - say from 500-150 years ago when the settlers of the US mainland decided that their beliefs (religion) were causing them to need more land - and murdered millions of the original natives of the US (American Indians) who had a different set of beliefs.

For people not familiar as to why I would present that as a holocaust - you might wanna check the amount of Indians that were slaughtered - to give you an idea - from an estimated 12 million in 1500 on the US mainland to barely 237,000 in 1900 - This is twice the number of Jews killed by the Nazis in WWII - but then I guess we had a good reason - we needed the land for our Gods churches and the Indians God wasnt recognized by the US government until the 1960s after many demonstrations and closings of highways by "left wing radical Indians"
