Very well said. Some people do NOT know how to travel at all. Their idea of travel is to stay in some expensive hotel and expect their tour guide to do everything for them.
Backpacking is a lot of fun. And it's cheap! If you do it right you can spend very little. And there are many people both guys and girls who welcome you there like this. My first night in Ireland my drinks were all paid for by this bloke who wanted to have a conversation about America with me. (No, he wans't gay.)
