AVN_Aly and Tom Hymes

Well, I just got finished listening to Tom Hymes, the Communications Director for the Free Speech Coalition talking about 2257 issues and I gotta tell ya... I could listen to Aly all day, but someone must have been smokin some really bad shit when they decided to make Hymes the spokesperson for the FSC.
The guy is so full of himself that he can't take time to actually listen to questions posed to him and can't stop enjoying the sound of his voice long enough for someone who is interviewing him to actually get a word in edgewise.

I thought Aly handled him pretty well, but she had to really put up with a lousy interview.

Tom, I have two suggestions for you... 1. learn how to listen and 2. learn how to answer the questions that are asked of you instead of going off on some weird rant... Good luck in your job as the Communcations Director... you've got your work cut out for you, simply due to your lack of tact and diplomacy. I only listened to find out if you had anything substantive to say on the subject of 2257... clearly I was disappointed and it was a waste of valuable airtime on YNotRadio.com

Gee, sorry, but I couldn't hear her. I could only hear myself, and that's not something I particularly want either. I thought I answered her questions, but if I didn't to your satisfaction, I apologize, but I guess you'd rather complain here than hit me up and have me answer them in a less time-constrained way.

Thanks for undersanding that I having a conversation with someone I couldn't hear.

I was booted from the show...
So I guess the candy coaters got a nice afternoon together stroking each other.

I am nearly The only guy that can reasonably educate people about the benefits of .XXX that has stepped up in its support publicly.

Free Speech rocks!

Hypocracy rules.

When exactly was it that you become such a complete and utter fucking lunatic? You used to make at least a little sense at times. Go put your tinfoil hat back on and light another pipe, YOU WERE NOT BOOTED FROM THE SHOW!

I was actually busy while you were doing your interview so really didn't hear that much, but I WILL say that it's VERY true when you call into Ynot sometimes that it is virtually impossible to hear who's talking to you.

In the future, TRY covering up the mouthpiece when you're not talking.

That has seemed to work for me.

I'm pretty sure he was booted Aly.

Brandy kicked KK by mistake and THEN kicked him.

I didn't pay THAT close attention, but I THINK that's what happened.

2257-BEN: Thanks so much for your very generous words!

I want to clarify that Tom was having trouble hearing me; there really wasn't an issue of him not listening. Makes doing an interview rather challenging... lol.. so, hopefully that'll be resolved before next week!

Hi Tom,
First of all, I do have a background in broadcasting, journalism and public speaking as well. I also recorded the interview so I could send it to a buddy of mine who was interested in the topic, but could not 'attend' the show.

If you would like, I'd be glad to send you a copy of the recording so you can see how you came across. It wasn't very flattering for you or the FSC.

I've been here on GFY for the past couple of months and have seen many messages from people who are looking for substantive information regarding 2257, many of whom go away as confused, or even more so, than before their posts.

When I got involved in my current 2257 project, I simply sat down, using the intellectual gifts God gave me, and read 18 USC 2256, 2257 and the 28 CFR Part 75 regulations and, even though I'm not a lawyer, came away with a fair grasp of the situation and what the potential impact was going to be on the industry. (BTW, I am not involved in the adult industry, except by virtue of my current project.)

People want to know specific information, particularly about the lawsuit, in terms that they can understand. For example, they want to know specifically what those 28 points of contention you mentioned are, and what the potential outcome for each of them is in terms of their affect on the regulations. I know you are not an attorney, I don't expect you to be, but I did expect you to be able to speak intelligently regarding some of the more substantive issues and how they're going to affect the industry.

I can understand your frustration with not being able to hear Aly... but if that was the case, why did you simply go on talking and rambling? She would have been able to ask you some much better questions had you simply kept your answers to the point, instead of you talking until you thought it was safe to stop.

Lastly, although I am not a member of the adult industry per se, I do believe in what the FSC is trying to do in terms of preserving free speech for everyone. To those endeavors, you have my support.

Regards,

You're welcome Aly.. I've got you scheduled in my Total Recorder software to record the show next week in the event I'm away from my computer.. (not likely, but it does happen now and again.) I know how tough a job it is behind the mike.

As in all situations, there are TWO sides to each coin... You say you got booted from the chat during the show, but what you don't say is why you got booted? I've seen lots of posts from you in the past couple of months here and quite frankly some of them are a bit much. I don't begrudge you the fact that you can have your opinion, but you have to understand as well that there are people who run the chat rooms who may have a difference of opinion from your own and who also might feel that your style of rhetoric violates their sense of professionalism, even though the things you might say may have some validity. There's plenty of REAL drama in life to go around without having to make up your own... Enjoy your afternoon!

WOW! I can't see that at all. I've known Tom for a very long time. Aside from hearing him speak on numerous panels Allie and I have had the pleasure of hanging with him one-on-one everywhere from Curacao a couple years ago to Internext in Vegas just this past show.

I found him to be very analytical in his responses to anything I've talked with him about. Meaning that he is "listening" and responding appropriately to my questions/conversation. I've also found him to be a very down to earth type of guy and anything but "full of himself"!

Tom is the type of guy that will make time on his extremely busy schedule for you regardless of who you are or what you do!

Why I got booted?
I Attacked a stalker that herasses me on the boards all the time.
I was delivering justice around my peers.

But hey if thats fair to you...
Thats fine, but I wouldnt imagine it being fair in front of the FSC.
Especially since i am about the only guy to stand up for .XXX publicly to educate people about it.

The whole thing was hypocracy in the making and the icing on the cake was announcing a Golf event by the FSC. How convenient after collecting $300.00 per new FSC member.

This industry really fuckin digusts me sometime when so called "Officials" come forward, censore thoughts and then kick the questioning voice in the side.

Not only did I major in journalism in college, I was also news director at KHOB/KSCR raido in Hobbs, NM and a reporter for several different newspapers. I am an accomplished public speaker and can certainly hold my own in a thread.... and GFY is all about marketing... isn't it? :-)

Ben, thinking for even the slightest second you can educate me on anything shows your lack of reality.

Go back to college and bring some novel regurgitation to the table.

You may be a nice kid, however, you really put yourself on display as a true unprofessional with this post.

My perception.

Let's keep in mind that it was a first show in this format for Aly, she's used to doing video -- which wasn't without its share of tech issues as well, as we all know. That's the beauty of this thing called internet -- it only works when it wants to, and we've all got Al Gore to blame for that!

As to Aliens debarkation from the chat, it's not like he didn't see it coming. And it's not like he didn't specifically say he was leaving before it happened -- or at least how I guess it happened -- since I was on the phone, talking to 3 people in icq and trying to find something online to answer an email at the same time -- so I didnt realize anyone (including myself inadverdently) had been booted until after the fact.

However, Alien's attempts at disrupting the chat room by making lame attempts at personally attacking me -- including and starting with his comment -- "Kimmykim, why are you such a stupid bitch" -- when neither myself nor anyone else had said anything to him, including hello or how's the weather, to have provoked him into such behaviour, would be my guess as to why he got the boot. I gave him some friendly advice, which was to shut up and stop trying to disrupt someone else's chat, but of course, him being the all-knowing, all-seeing and ever so omnipotent AlienQ, he chose to ignore that advice, as well as the advice of the shows producers. Heck, he even went so far as to tell Brandy there was so fun and no sport in not being able to be negative in the chat...

Frankly I am delighted that Alien has decided he fully supports .xxx -- I'm hoping he will spend the next few months working diligently on their behalf to give them the type of support they so truly need.

So you have a 'stalker' and you are not able to simply ignore him...? You have to go on the attack to make you feel like you are actually beating him at his own game?

You do not have any pwer over anyone, particularly in a chat room on the internet. The only power you DO have is over yourself. So if you decide to relinquish that power to someone else who is 'stalking' you, that is the decision that you made for yourself. My advice to you would be not to let yourself get sucked into these sorts of things... Just consider the source and ignore him / her.

Fight the mine goes to 29!
Now who in their right mind actually posts a Microsoft Word .DOC file on a web site and actually expects anyone to read it? Perhaps if they took the time to convert it to a more web friendly format it would get read. Portable Document Format (PDF) was invented just for this...

You seem to have some issues here with FSC. while on one side, you say you support what FSC does, but then you offer criticism. not saying that criticism is bad, but look at all the things you have written so far about tom, based on your 1 meeting with him, and 1 radio show.

BTW, i found that word document within 5 seconds of going to FSC website when i saw you posting about wonderng what those 28 points were.

maybe some self-DD is due before posting?

You just don't listen do you?

Shut the fuck up and go do some actual work. Or go and spend your time telling everyone how great you think .xxx is if that's your new calling in life.

No one cares what you say to me. Do you not understand that? I don't and no one else does, especially not when they icq me saying, did he just call you [insert whatever foul expletive without creative merit or proof here] and I say, look at the source, I don't care and you should not either.

You do not "pay me back". Don't you get that?

You do not bother me any more than a fly on the wall would. Perhaps every once in a while I hear the buzzing but it's not even enough to make me pretend I have a flyswatter and bother to get my lazy ass up and look for it.

I do, on the other hand, find it amusing, when people were attacking you left and right and icq'ing me about it, how I told them to leave you alone. You are obviously in a very fragile mental state, and Lord only knows what little tiny grain of sand on your scale will cause you to go postal and actually hurt yourself, or maybe even someone else.

Go and talk to confucy, you two could make beautiful babies together.

Thanks, Jake, I appreciate your comments, but I'm sure this was not my greatest interview. Technical problems aside, I do tend to rattle on, and I apologize if I did. I also think Ben is right that people are hungry for substantial information, and for specific ways that these regs will affect them, and even though Ben (and many others) may have taken the time to go through and presume to assess their impact, few people quite understand how difficult it is, if not impossible, even for the attorneys, to come to any sort of consensus on that. And please don't forget, this is ongoing litigation, and I am a plaintiff. I feel very uncomfortable talking about the details of the complaint, which is readily available for anyone to read, and which I will gladly email to anyone who emails me and requests it. I assume Ben's comments are made in good faith, and certainly do not begrudge his right to make them. I was told that this was a sort of overview interview, so that's how I approached it. How I wish I had time to go into detail about the 28 individual claims, but they are almost certain to be amended, so how wise would that have been? But again, I agree that I could have done better. That said, I'm not quite sure why Ben seems to need to impugn my intelligence, but I don't know him and he doesn't know me, so if that's how things are done on the boards, so be it. :-)

And you actually opened that Word document on the FSC web site, knowing full well that the FSC has some pretty interesting 'adversaries' in terms of their agenda? There's not telling what kinds of things can be found in a Word document on the net, especially directly available on a web site. Why do you think there is a pop up security warning that comes up if you click on the link. It's not a secure thing to do.

Granted, Tom could not have conceivably talked about all 28 things, but he certainly could have said the link was up there on the web site. This method of using one medium (radio) to promote another medium (web site) is called 'spiral branding'. Someone who is as versed in online communications as Tom should be, as indicated by his 'resume' would know this and use this technique to get his point across and the specific information out to his audience.

I have the recording of the interview. As I said in an earlier post, PERCEPTION is reality. The perception of him in the interview is not one that is flattering to him or his organization, no matter how important their message.

I've made my comments directly at Tom and have acknowledged there were technical issues that compounded the issues. Others here have also stated that Tom is an impassioned voice in the industry. Which is a good thing. I only made my original post in an attempt to let Tom know that the way he came across wasn't very flattering at all. For him to think the interview was a success or that it went well, would be a mistake that I would think he would not want to make in the future.

I am sure you will do a fine job Hymes.

Webmasters do not like it when an organisation gets new members to support a fight that is important then suddenly announce a Golf Event.

Just my 2cents 4 times now obviously ya not comfortable with addressing it or there would have been a response. But then...

It's interesting (and particularly telling) that you actually think a response from Tom (or anyone else from the FSC) is deserved regarding your post.

congratulations! you have officially become a GFY member with an opening post that nails someone, then apologizes at the end (well, atleast you apologized, so many are small and woudn't)

with your opening post, you managed to say:

- [FSC must have been] smokin some really bad shit when they decided to make Hymes the spokesperson for the FSC.

- so full of himself

- [he] can't stop enjoying the sound of his voice long enough for someone who is interviewing him to actually get a word in edgewise.

- [tom was a] lousy interview.

- [suggest that he]... 1. learn how to listen and 2. learn how to answer the questions that are asked of you instead of going off on some weird rant...

- [he has a] lack of tact and diplomacy.

- [and] only listened to find out if you had anything substantive to say on the subject of 2257... clearly I was disappointed and it was a waste of valuable airtime on YNotRadio.com

... and yes, your post did come across as impuning his intelligence.

what were you saying about perception is reality? take a look at the 3 fingers pointing back at ya for some humbleness and humility.

AlienQ's agenda...

1. Keep quiet and have people THINK he's a complete idiot OR
2. Keep posting and remove all doubt in the minds of the readers.
3. Use this, and any other thread as a vehicle to increase his post count.

If you were booted because of your pro-XXX beliefs, i would have an issue with the booting... because you do have valid points to bring up in a rational discussion about the pros and cons of XXX, but you got booted because you were harassing KK, when she did nothing to provoke you in the chat room.

whatever issues you two have, that's between you and her, but in a public forum where people have convened in a social manner, you were the party pooper with your negative explicatives..... that's why you got booted.

no one censored your viewpoints, just your bad behaviour.

I agree. Hopefully he just made a mistake. This place tends to encourage kids to act out for attention / marketing. Sometimes people develop and become more progressive than the environment while others remain chained to it.

Only time will tell. Tom is a great guy and he is aware that these type things come with the territory. He handled it with professionalism.

Impuning someone's intelligence specifically involves saying that a particular individual is STUPID... I didn't say that about Tom... not at all. I simply said in my original post that he CAME OFF as someone who is full of himself and doesn't listen. I have since posted 2 messages to Tom directly to let him know that I fully understand the reasons why the interview went so terribly AND I have apologized for my post. I did it publicly and without any shame or remorse. If I'm wrong, I'll certainly admit I'm wrong. As you state, the same cannot be said of a great many posts here on GFY.

Do not fall in the sheep category dude.

Be very aware of people that offer freedom for a price.

Freedom is lost when you pay others to do battle for your own freedom of expression against any power. Including our government right down the FSC that cut a deal with them under the guise of "Protection".

A smart businessman does not need such solace, he needs to know he is right in what he does and will defend what he does against those that offer cheap escapism or those that oppose the actions of his business.

Justify.

I'm a big fan of Tom Hymes. I've known him for several years and he's one of the nicest guys in the biz. Far from having a huge ego.

I think if you don't know Tom and listen to an interview where it's hard to hear each other, it's easy to say he liked to hear himself talk. But the real answer is he has an incredble grasp of the english language and is very articulate.

Just my 2 cents.
