Anyone regret pulling their wisdom teeth?

My dentist and another oral surgeon suggest I get my wisdom teeth pulled. I'm in my mid-30s and didn't even know I had them until I got some X-rays as they're completely inside the gums. They're not causing me any problems yet, but according to the X-rays they are pushing closely against the adjacent molars (one wisdom tooth being completely horizontal), and they say pulling them will help prevent possible future problems. The oral surgeon told me there is a risk of nerve damage (1 in 300 statistically), so I'm quite apprehensive. I know each individual case is different, but are there any stories of people in similar situation who wished they hadn't gotten them pulled?

Get em pulled. If they are pushing against mollars it's only a matter of time before one of them compacts or pushes the molar out completely.

trust me, wisdom tooth pain is like getting your neck sliced off.

I was in tears for 24 hours before getting one of mine removed.

Avoid the future pain, have it hauled out.

Exactly my boyfriend´s case. But I think is still better than some nasty bone inflammation these teeth can cause.

I have to go soon too. My xrays looked completely fucked. The wisdom teeth are all compacted against my molars and one gimpy wisdom tooth actually broke through the gum sideways.... UGH.

Hi KB, I had all 4 of mine removed the same day, a few years ago. They weren't impacted or anything like that; they had grown in just fine, but the brushing was an issue because they were so far back, I literally would gag several times everytime I brushed my teeth in trying to reach them effectively.
Everyone has a different tolerance for pain, but my experience really wasn't as bad as I thought it was gonna be. Just be sure to follow the post-op advice to the letter and you should be fine.

FUCK NO!!

They were pushing on my other teeth, took forever to even come in over the course of 4 years. If I had a scalpel at times I would have cut those mother fuckers out myself. They turned molars, and some of other teeth, but the daily pain was insane.

Went to the oral surgeon, had all 4 removed at once. Slept a week. Drank 7up, and ate soup. Felt a million times better after all was said and done, holes healed, and fucking-a.

Best money ever spent.

i got my lower right wisdom tooth pulled, but not the upper right.

It caused my upper right one to drop, and i had to get it pulled latter.

If you do get it pulled get them both done at the same time, your recovery time will only be a little longer and you won't have to go in for surgery twice.

I had mine dug out when I was in my mid 20's (none of them had broken the skin). It was a ROYAL pain for a week or so, but after my parents spent thousands on braces, I figured I owed them not to have crooked teeth

Just do EXACTLY what the doctor/dentist tells you to do and you'll be fine.

I had mine pulled for a simular reason. Had one wisdom tooth pushing on a molar. They where so tight and weak where the space was from the molar to the wisdom tooth, no I couldn't get a tooth brush in there. I was eating something, Dont remember what, and I heard a pop and major pain. The pain so so intense that when they where pulled, I was so happy that there was no pain. After the surgery I didn't feel anything. No pain at all. I sapose it was due to the fact of one cracking that bad. I was up and moving and doing everything and anything.

My wife on the other hand had them pulled and she was in bed for 4 days, even with good drugs. Bitched alot too hehehehe.

Get them pulled. It's a fairly routine procedure. It will save you grief in the long-run. Concerned? Get a second opinion.

as a matter of fact i did one of them yesterday and it went very smooth....it depends how bad the situation is.... this one was supposed to go out by itself instead it was moving on and hitting the molars....so we thought better removing it...and i will have the lower ones removed in september...but i would check your situation carefully...i mean if they dont hurt, maybe you can keep 'em. and in either case, do one by one, not all 4 together, then you spend a shitty WHOLE week... doing one by one, yes more expensive and more time in the long run, but you just spend 1-2 days recovering while you can still work and do other stuff.

AND dont forget that when you have those out you CANT eat any kind of crunchy shit for 1-2 days.... with one x time... imagine with 4... one WHOLE week eating baby food

my 2 cents anyway ;-)

My dentist told me that I didn't need mine pulled. They have grown in completely but they are sore most of the time and still cause irritation around the gums etc.

I may get them pulled just to ease the pressure.

Yea I had all 4 of mine pulled back at the ass-end of high school...my dentist actually called me a freak...my 12 year molars had not come in due to the crazy things the wisdom teeth were doing back there....better to get rid of them completely.

I still remember the damn process...they actually did the procedure at the local hospital, they put me right out, (but I do remember a sweet French Canadian Nurse singin' to me ass i went under...that was the only good part)...then i woke up and they wouldnt give me a drink..the bastards...lol

Thanks for all the comments. It helps relieve some of my jitters.
Since I don't experience any problems with the wisdom teeth now, it's hard to imagine what future problems could develop, but it seems to be a real possibility. Now it's a question of whether to do it all in one shot or space out the pain.

:-(

I had mine pulled a few years ago -- completely overrated. I wasn't even sedated when they pulled them. I got home, took painkillers and watched a few movies for two days. That was it. Not a big deal. Do it right & follow their instructions and you won't have a dry socket or that shit.

haven't pulled out mine yet but i had 2 molars pulled out few years ago and i think im more than ok now.

a dentist friend of mine would suggest that you undergo a surgery once you have some case of teeth pushing each other.

or for some other reason, this might enlighten you:

I can empathise. I am putting off what I know needs to be done.
I have to have my wisdoms pulled, have teeth rearranged and have jaw surgery over a 2 and half year period.

I am dreading it but I need it done.

I recieved nerve damage after having mine pulled.
It affects my bottom jaw part, and the right side of my tongue.
But it's better than dealing with the irritation.

I'm 36. I have had the top 2 pulled. The first 3 years ago the 2nd last month. They were easy to get out.

Actually just back from the dentist today and the one on the lower right is in sideways like yours and my dentist refered me to an oral surgeon. Not looking forward to it since it a bit more complicated and cutting will be involved, but why wait until problems start THEN get it fixed?

My dentist told me that there was a risk of nerve damage because of the location of wisdom teeth. But if you HAVE to have them out what choice do you have?

I did a silly thing and decided when they said mine were in there that I should try chewing on stuff on those gums to make them come out. Basically I wqas teething at 20something. Worked though. They came out and I chew on em all the time now. =]

Just have them all out and stock up on tomato soup and oatmeal or something like that. Easy choice really, they're too far back.. God fucked up by jamming them way back there. (wont admit it though)

After I had mine pulled there was NO pain. I felt nothing. The prescription for pain killers went right in the trash bin after I got them home. It was heaven. No more pain.
If you have a good dentist you won't feel a thing.

I have had 3 taken out so far, no problems. A good dentist makes it smooth. My last one took no more then 20 min in the office and out the door. Slept the day away, and next day was good to go. Worst part is having the damn guaze in your mouth.

Well it sounds to me like you may want to wait and get a possible third opinion. It couldn't hurt to wait a few more weeks.

I had mine out a couple of years ago but they weren't positioned like yours are. I only had two and they were in the top row. Also, they grew out like any other tooth so all they did was give me a few shots of novocaine and pulled them out. It took longer for the numbing to work than it did to take them out.

All I can say is if there's about a 1 in 300 chance you'll get nerve damage I'd get a third opinion in the mix. Also, I hear the bottom teeth, if you have them, are the ones that can cause the most trouble. If that's the case I definitely ask around some more.

i had mine pulled when i was 21. wasn't bad at all, but then again, mine weren't impacted very bad. the pills were great, they made the whole expierience worthwhile, i was completely high for like a week.

it sucks after you get them out though because you can't really eat any real food. stock up on pudding and jello. took me near a month to be able to eat msot things again. i have never craved popcorn so bad before in my life.

I had mine all 4 removesd on the same day as well. I broke one of them eating seafood. Got a bit of lobster shell, and it broke. So they said to remove them. It tool about 3 hours, and I went home with a mouth full of cotton. removed the cotton 2 hours later, and that was the end of the bleeding or swelling.

Had a horrid experience with the bottom right one removed a couple of months ago. Have had 3 pieces of jagged root/bone chip what the fuck ever painfully work their way out since. I am getting tired of chewing on the left and I too have the problem of food working it's way over and jamming into the space.
