Dreamweaver MX 2004???

I don't get it. People swear up and down about this product and how much it rules. I have been using Front Page for many years now but I want to switch over to a Mac and cannot use Front Page in Mac. So I download 30-day trial to give it a whirl.

All I can say is Aghhhh! It is so much more labor intensive that Front Page. Hell, I even bought a 700 page book on learning Dreamweaver and it still sucks. It should not take 5 steps to create a link - sorry.

I guess I am a PC user forever which really sucks because I really want a MAC bad. I even tried GoLive and it sucks worse than Dreamweaver.

I have not fully dived into Dreamweaver MX 2004, but from all I have seen it seems to be better than Dreamweaver MX in my opinion. I use Dreamweaver MX for basic page construction as well as a text editor, then tweak pages in TextPad or Notepad when needed.

I don't know if the book you have is the Dreamweaver MX Bible by Lowery, but that book was an excellent resource in learning the tricks of the program, and they have a version for MX 2004 as well.

From all I hear from other Mac users, if you are going to be on a Mac platform, it's better to go with Dreamweaver than GoLive.

You need to read & comprehend the book in order to make anything out of it, buying it isn't enough.

Say what you will about Macs, but after getting spyware in my registry once again, I am sick of reformatting my computer and had it up to here with Windows and PCs. Don't have to worry about that shit with Macs (or viruses for that matter).

How about investing $0 in a linux and run frontpage thru some emulator instead of 1000's in a mac?
But I guess you want a mac.

I did read the book. It was a great book at that. And having read it and understanding it, Dreamweaver is a lot more labor intensive that Front Page is. There are so many things that are better with FP and MX it is not even funny.

If you're not fairly well versed in html, or whatever language the site you are working with, you may have troubles with Dreamweaver MX. Frontpage is built to help non coders make decent sites. Dreamweaver has many features that aid more code intensive designers and webmasters.

I personally can not stand front page, all the useless tags it adds into files, limited ability. Works very poorly with dynamic files (php, asp, aspx, etc.)

But end of the day, use what works for you... If you are making money from Frontpage sites, why change?

I found your take interesting, Ive been using front page for about 6 years and just switched to dreamweaver mx 2004 about 3 weeks ago. The first few hours were rough, I had a hell of a time getting used to the program. But once I made a few pages and got the hang of it I realized what a massive pile of shit front page is. The split view is great and if you make an identical page in both editors you'll see a huge difference in the amout of code between the two. For links click the link button on the toolbar or right click and press make link. Also the ability to size your tables has been helpfull to me. But the thing I like most about the program is it forces you to learn html, after 3 weeks with dreamweaver I know more html than I ever knew in front page after 6 years. I opened front page the other day and ended up uninstalling it about 2 min later, be patient and stick with dreamweaver I think you'll be happy that you did in the end.

Ahhh... I remember those Front Page days. When I first started messing around on the web, we bought a copy. About a week later, we bought Dreamweaver.

used front page when i was a baby - pile of crap for grandmas flower shop designs. Dreamweaver is the biz - but then Golive is also getting a test out for some of our sites. No Front page in this office ...

Dreamweaver owns... to create a link you just start typing <a.. and it auto completes it for you, takes whole 2 seconds...

Name a few then... My guess is u are using DW correctly. The shitty html that frontpage creates is its biggest problem. DWMX & DWMX 04 are pretty damn similar. Really 04 just tidies up the interface but it can't do much MX can't.

Not really following you. I use MX 2004. To make a text link for example, you select the text, right click and choose "make link".

Dreamweaver is so simple you really don't need a book for basic pages, only very complex stuff. You do have to play around with it a few hours to learn it like a lot of high end software.

you would be 100% better off with a simple free to download text editor and a book on html or php or whatever you want to create your pages.
plenty of free text editors out their that will work with mac or pc or any other operating system. their are plenty of free sites on the web too that can teach you html, css or any other language you need.

dreamweaver is a bunch of dressed up monkey bullshit that you don't need.
plenty of pages and sites were created with notepad before dreamweaver was ever thought of.

sorry but the words frontpage and webmaster just shouldn't be used in the same sentence.

DW, take your time, you'll see the benefits in no time... and don't forget that it only seems labor intensive because it doesn't put a ton of code in for you like FP (ie. doesn't fuck up your pages).

And ya like the others are saying, if you don't like it just get a basic text editor... but don't do any of this shit w/o learning the rawest form of HTML first. Editors aren't built to create code, only make it easier.

Good luck.

I should add this to the conversation in regards to Dreamweaver MX being labor intensive.....others have said it, but I think this is important: Using Dreamweaver MX (or MX 2004) alone without knowing basic html can be very challenging and in my opinion is not a great idea in the long run. I would not recommend for anyone to use a WYSIWYG editor alone without knowing and understanding what the code is doing; it's better to learn the code in Notepad or a text editor first, and then decide if you want to use Dreamweaver to make certain aspects of page building more efficient. In a nutshell, Dreamweaver as a way to build sites without knowing any html can be challenging, but if you understand the code behind what it is doing, it can become a powerful tool. I agree with FF: "Editors aren't built to create code, only make it easier."
