I shoot out of Manual. I was told by this photographer the other day to stick with TV and AV and that using Manual meant you were trying to be smarter than the camera.

I like both Priority settings, but they do seem to limit you.

    Thoughts?

I normaly use Av, I like to be able to control the depth of field.

But that doesn't really matter with porn shooting anyway.

I don't see the point in Manual as my eyes don't work quite as well as the light sensors in my camera

I shoot everything in manual. I want total control over the aperture and the shutter speed. I don't want my camera telling me what it thinks is the best shutter speed or aperture for me to use. If I'm doing poin-n-shoot type stuff however, I'll use one of the automatic features. But for my bread-n-butter, it's manual all the way

I dont shoot much for work, so I use the Auto most of the time. But I am happy as hell that I have the other features.

It depends on what you're shooting and your lighting scheme.

I usually use Av mode, but I tend to do outdoor landscape shots. I sit at f8 or f11 to fit into the lens sweet spot and minimise diffraction.

For macro shots I also use Av to decide how much depth of field I want to show.

The only time I've found full manual useful is with a diffused flash and a camera that had a fixed flash exposure.

The great thing about digital is you can see the result right away, so why not experiment with manual settings? It's not like you're booking a model for a shoot, guessing on the exposure & waiting for the images to be developed to discover you were off & they're all underexposed. Have fun!

                    I agree.

Dean, I just didn't like the way the photographer told me that I was trying to outsmart the camera. People say it depends on the light, but I don't see how, Manual offers greater control and you can see your exposure balance all the same. I admit, you are faster in the priority settings but if you want a great series of shots, I would say through it in bracket-exposure and fire away in Manual!

that guy that gave u that advice meant shooting with existing-light situations.

it's impossible to shoot with studio flash and use anything but manual (and get a correctly exposed picture)....this is because the light source taking the pic (the flash) only exists for a brief moment in time, your camera sets itself only to what it can "see", not what it's going to be seeing

Manual over here, Unless there is many holes in the lighting at which point I'll use aperture auto .. but usually even when shooting sports I like to go manual .. it's become second nature

Bravo Mike great work and I have been full manual for 5 yrs. Its not hard to learn especially in the digital age where you get instant feed back. If you dont want to practice with a model your paying buy a used mannequin .Practice with that, I bought one I named clay and he will sit still for hours while I try different things(setting, light) and it made a great prop for two of my shoots
