Name this guitar god, highly underrated (pic)

Talk about massively underrated, this guy is a guitar legend.

Warning you must be over the age of 25 to more than likely have a remote clue about how good this guy is.

Michael Schenker reached his zenith with UFO. While MSG produced some respectable albums, his best years were unquestionably during the years he was in UFO (I saw him play with both bands).

Seems like some of you don't know that Michael was also in the Scorpions with his older brother Rudolf, not once but twice (on the first album and again post-UFO on the "Lovedrive" album).

Personally, I always thought that Ulrich Roth (who replaced Michael Schenker in the Scorpions) had way more passion in his playing, and the Scorpions enjoyed their biggest commercial success with Matthias Jabs on lead guitar.

It's been well documented that Michael's alcohol and substance abuse got him kicked out of many bands, and prevented him from taking a place in bands of even greater stature (he was once slated to replace Joe Perry in Aerosmith, and was considered as a replacement in Ozzy Osbourne's group after Randy Rhodes died, however his prediliction for drunken and erratic behavior squashed those opportunities).

Still he was a kick butt guitarist in his prime.

Time to put on some UFO...

Agreed.

It's been awhile since I've played some UFO (on vinyl no less).

Just one thing...whatever his appearance, Jerry Garcia was no slouch on guitar, or banjo (or even his first instrument, piano) for that matter. What some of you may not know, is that Jerry was missing a finger on his picking hand (and he often finger picked, especially when he played bluegrass, which he loved).

Look closely at his pictures - he has no middle finger; he lost it an accident as a teen (his brother chopped it off while they were splitting some wood). This didn't stop him from becoming a rock legend as well as a well-respected jazz guitarist during his day.

Anyway, honestly, Jerry on his good nights cooked with the best of guitarists. Try and play his stuff. It's not easy. Few could improvise like him.

Aside from being a great guitarist, Jerry was also an accomplished fine artist. I have a few of his lithos, and even some ties that he designed.

Now, I'm even going to have a little Ben and Jerry's "Cherry Garcia" in his honor.

Quote:
An Elegy for Jerry By Robert Hunter

(Delivered August 13, 1995, The Jerry Garcia Memorial, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California.)

Jerry, my friend,
you've done it again,
even in your silence
the familiar pressure
comes to bear, demanding
I pull words from the air
with only this morning
and part of the afternoon
to compose an ode worthy
of one so particular
about every turn of phrase,
demanding it hit home
in a thousand ways
before making it his own,
and this I can't do alone.
Now that the singer is gone,
where shall I go for the song?

Without your melody and taste
to lend an attitude of grace
a lyric is an orphan thing,
a hive with neither honey's taste
nor power to truly sting.

What choice have I but to dare and
call your muse who thought to rest
out of the thin blue air,
that out of the field of shared time,
a line or two might chance to shine --

As ever when we called,
in hope if not in words,
the muse descends.

How should she desert us now?
Scars of battle n her brow,
bedraggled feathers on her wings
and yet she sings, she sings!

May she bear thee to thy rest,
the ancient bower of flowers
beyond the solitude of days,
the tyranny of hours --
the wreath of shining laurel lie
upon your shaggy head,
bestowing power to play the lyre
to legions of the dead.

If some part of that music
is heard in deepest dream,
or on some breeze of Summer
a snatch of golden theme,
we'll know you live inside us
with love that never parts
our good old Jack O' Diamonds
become the King of Hearts.

I feel your silent laughter
at sentiments so bold
that dare to step across the line
to tell what must be told,
so I'll just say I love you
which I never said before
and let it go at that old friend,
the rest you may ignore.
RIP Jerry,

ADG Webmaster

I defy you to name another guitar player whose sound is so uniquely and singularly identifiable to its creator, where you would know from a mile away who it was without fail, with the exception of Hendrix.

True gods invent themselves and spawn creation in a way that you know it can never be duplicated no matter what mortal attempts to replicate it, appropriate it, decimate it, or investigate it.

Well, Yngwie has a very unique and identical sound that's uniquely his, but whether you find it pleasant or not is another question :D

Randy Rhodes and Rocky George are in the same boat :D - throw Eric Johnson's in there too for 'too much of every effect too often but in a tasteful way' as well.

My favourite few guitarists of the 'hard rock' hair band era:

1) Rik Emmett (Triumph)
2) Steve Vai (for his David Lee Roth and early solo stuff)
3) Larry Mitchell (ya had to see this guy to believe him - nuts)
4) Yngwie Malmsteen (played exactly the same way on every song, but man was it impressive)
5) Marty Friedman (solely for his stuff with Jason Becker and Cacophony, in Megadeth he gained technique and restraint)
6) Richie Blackmore, the father of shred rhythm and leads

I know you mean Tony Iommi - he is an awesome left-handed guitarist. In his case he only lost the tips of two fingers, and then had plastic tips installed as replacements. Not taking anything away from his accomplishments, but just pointing out a few details.

Tony developed some awesome licks with Black Sabbath. Oddly enough he lists as one of his inspirations Django Reinhardt, a famous jazz guitarist who died in the early 50's, who also lost two fingers in an accident, and whom also developed his own unique style of guitar playing.

When tendons in my (right) picking hand were severed when I was a teenager, I also learned to play with just three fingers (my thumb, index and middle fingers) after hearing about how Django overcame his adversity. I didn't learn about Tony Iommi having been similarly hurt and influenced until years later.

I'm not even putting myself anywhere near the class of guitarist as Tony Iommi or Django Reinhardt, I am merely pointing out how people can overcome some of life's misfortunes and still follow their dreams.

One of my main inspirations on guitar was actually Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac), since he mostly finger picks everything (to the point that his fingers often bleed while he is playing), and he also does not read music.

I've been playing guitar probably since before most of you were born, and I continue to play every single day (I practice while taking time out to watch the news each day, lol).

Music is one of the highest art forms and brings me pleasure every day. To me it is never about who is better, but about the beautiful diversity in styles and form.

My favorite guitarists changes all the time, however these people I consider quite good, and worthy of being on the list of best ever (in no particular order):

Robert Johnson (inspiration to Hendrix and a score of others)
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Dave Navarro
Joe Satriani
Jeff Beck
Duane Allman
Eric Clapton
Stevie Ray Vaughn

You missed Slash.

My brother is on tour with Ted Nugent this summer as drum tech. Looking forward to seeing him when they come to the PNW in August.

I was never overly impressed with Slash's work with G 'n R - Axl was always too whiney for my liking (although I love "Welcome to the Jungle" and a few other songs), however with Velvet Revolver he seems to be able to showcase his licks better.

The PNW has some great venues...I've been to a few shows at the Gorge. I also saw a great BB King show on the waterfront with Mt. Ranier looking beautiful in the distance during sunset (a nice clear day).

Lots of great club shows downstairs at the Crocodile Cafe during visits to Seattle back in the grunge days too...

I also recall a show with Winton Marsellies at the Key arena.

Not to show my age, but since I was born in Seattle, my very first live concert (before I was 10) was The Righteous Brothers, with Sergio Mendes and the Brazil '66 as the opening act at Seattle Coliseum as it was then called.

Can anybody recommend some songs from Jeff Beck that showcase his style? His name always crops up in guitar conversations but I've never heard anything of his (that I'm aware of).
