If a reporter knew of a nuclear bomb in downtown LA but refused to divulge which terrorist organization was behind the bomb or when it would be detonated, would it then be ok to prosecute the reporter? And if so, why?

I dont know about the other case so I cannot compare the situations but I assume your scenario is pretty far fetched compared to the situation discussed here.

if a person knew a nuclear bomb was going to go off downtown in the middle of a major US city and they refused to name who was behind it and/or when it was going to go off, I believe they have that right not to say shit.

take the answer with them to the death. not everyone who dies is innocent, some people are better off dead. sure millions of innocent people will die but its just part of a cycle that will never be stopped. everyone dies some day so what does it really matter if they die a natural or unnatural way? sure, familes will be destroyed, children left motherless/fatherless, trillions of dollars of damage, city turned into a toxic waste land, but thats the price they pay for living in the country which is the #1 super power.

many many countries/people hate the US but cannot do anything about it because they simply lack the resources and finances that would be required to scale a successful attack against the US.

You obviously have no idea what is going on. Reporters sources were confidential, otherwise there would be no news to report. Nobody should be in jail for not tattling on someone because they government decides that they want the source this time.
