    50 Terrorist Groups in Canada

    The Canadian Security Intelligence Service, counterpart of the CIA, said terrorist representatives are actively raising money, procuring weapons, ?manipulating immigrant communities? and facilitating travel to and from the United States and other countries.

    Besides al-Qaida, those groups include Islamic Jihad; Hezbollah and other Shiite groups; Hamas, the Palestinian Force 17, Egyptian Al Jihad and various other Sunni groups from across the Middle East, CSIS said.
    "Osama Bin Laden has named Canada as the group?s fifth highest Christian target, yet Canadians still see U.S. foreign policy as more detrimental to Canada?s future than terrorism according to a poll. It?s time for Canadians to wake up and realize that radical Islamic terrorism does not see Canada as an ally, but only as a haven."

                      Oh get off it. What the heck do you think motivated all the groups you mention, if not US foreign policy in the middle east over the past 80 years?

                      Why do I bother: I can anticipate your response. But if you have even a fraction of the knowledge you profess about these issues, whatever you write, you know damn well that prolonged interference in other countries' affairs would have produced the exact same results wherever we had pursued such a policy.

                      Pan-Arab nationalism and religous fundamentalism were the inevitable consequences of our sustained efforts to keep the region unstable. It is total fantasy to imagine that otherwise the people of the middle east would be any more anti-american, anti-western than say, the people of Singapore.

                      The middle east was the crossroads of the world for hundreds of years. The region had particularly close ties with Britain, some countries not seeking independence until the 1950's and 1960's. There is nothing whatever to suggest that left to their own devices, there would be such a thing as arab or islamic terrorism today.

                                  Left to their own devices there would probably be thriving democracies such as the one in Iran under Mohammed Mossadegh. The problem was that Mossadegh decided to nationalize the petroleum industry (like President Hugo Chavez is currently doing in Venezuela) so that the profits can go directly back to the people of the country. That's a no no.

                                      Your point is of course not relevant to the title of this thread nor the thrust of the article...now is it?

                                      The point of the title is the complaceny of the Canadian government and Canadians per se about the fact that they are harboring 50 global terrorist groups and allowing more to come into their country because of their relaxed immigration laws.

                                      The thrust of the article is the fact that Canada...according to Osama Bin Laden is 5th on the list of terrorist targets.

                                      FYI America is not the only government whose foreign policy is in play for the past 80 years...and in fact coutries of Euorpe played a much larger role in the mid east than America has over the past 80 years.

                                      It is immaterial what may have caused these terrorists groups to come into being...the fact is they exist...they are active...and their target is not just America. It is Western culture per se.

                                          Canada's clandestine Communications Security Establishment, which listens in on conversations and translates messages from foreigners under suspicion, has increased its annual budget by 57 percent since Sept. 11, and Canada has spent some $6.5 billion to beef up security along its border.

                                          There currently are four Arab Muslim men in Canadian jails under "security certificates," which allow Ottawa to detain suspects without public trial or evidence in the name of national security.

                                                      Wrong...the fact is the USA funded and trained the Muhajadeen...of which Bin Laden became a part of...to fight the Soviets when they invaded Afghanistan. Bin Laden helped to form al Qaeda...in later years and they created the problem.
