Suprised they didn't use a sharp shooter like someone else pointed out. But I guess if the first shot didn't take him down and the guy tryed to pull the kid out the window the officer could have maybe grabbed him.

However, if that were a hostage situation in the US, the suspect holding the person(s) hostage would most likely have a gun held to the captive and/or a slew of other lethal weapons.
