What kind of mattress do you have?
I'm looking to invest in some kind of state of the art mattress. I see commercials on TV advertising the Sleep Number Mattress and Temper Pedic Mattress and others....and I wonder if they are all they are cracked up to be. Anybody got any experience with something other then a run of the mill mattress that gives them a good nights sleep?

I have a temper pedic and i LOVE it - a mattress is really not somthing you should skimp on, you spend so much of your life sleeping, and the quality of sleep you get greatly effects your day

I have heard the sleep numbers are not what they are cracked up to be... I know if a producer who spent a couple thousand on one for his house. He hated it so much he took it out a week later and its now used in his studio.

I went to a mattress store looking to buy a temper pedic one. I liked it! I really did! and because I walked in there Biased towards them I didnt even want to tr out the spring mattress ones.
I did however come across a really REALLY comfortable Simons spring one. and the thing is, you DON'T sink in. yet the padding on top makes you feel like you are sleeping on top of a cloud (made of cashmere). It cost me 1800$, I also got Down pillows and egyptian cotton linens, and everybody who lays down on my bed do not want to get up any more. I used to sleep alot, now I just stay in bed all day (I don't know if that's a good or bad thing) hope this helps! and good luck with your mattress, you should go all the way when it comes to it! |

Tempur Pedic
King size, with the pillows. Fuckign love that thing! I can get out of bed and not disturb my wife, plus I get the greatest sleep ever. Took me a few days to get used to it, as I am not a big fan of harder mattresses. It even cured my wife's neck problems...

Mattresses are mostly marketing. No matter what you buy you're getting roughly the same innerspring unit with various levels of toppings and tickings.
I'm not sold on memory foam, air or water as alternatives for myself, however, to each their own. You have to sleep in the thing, so get what you like. You're going to overpay for your bed no matter what you get. They are among the most marked up of all furniture/home furnishings. The wholesale raw cost on a $3000 queen bed may only be $300. Perceived value plays a large part of the retail sales process. |

There are some unique constructions out there for sure. Simmons uses pocketed coils that are glued together. I have no direct experience with these but I've heard that once the glue that holds the fabric pockets together comes undone the bed isn't very comfortable. Coil count is also misleading. A bed may have a very high coil count but it may be made from very thin guage wire and essentially not very durable. Memory foam is a nice padding for atop a good traditional mattress, but it may not have the longevity alone that a traditional innerspring mattress has. Foam traditionally breaks down in the air. It will get dry and brittle over time. If you don't plan on keeping your bed for the next 20 to 30 years it may be okay to be a bit experimental. |

i just bought myself a new mattress about 3 weeks ago, from Sleep Train http://www.sleeptrain.com/sandiegolocs.htm
the bad part about buying a mattress, is that the major manufacturers all change the model numbers on their line, so that they're exclusive to a particular store (what one model is called in sleep train, will be called something else at another store) http://www.whatsthebest-mattress.com/tutorial5.shtml since i'm a side sleeper, i went with something plush top...i ended up buying the Sealy Posturpedic Preferred Series Wexford, Ultra Plush Euro Pillow Top <--- go to sleep train & check that one out! ![]() |
