Question for you Americans Re: Hockey

How much NHL coverage is there on American TV..... like in past years of course, not last year. :D

    Anyone?

Just how many hockey games are on the tube in the USA during any regular NHL season?

    Just curious.

ESPN didn't renew it's NHL contract, so the Outdoor Life Network (OLN) picked up the contract. Not sure how many nationally televised games are on per season, but local coverage shows pretty much every game.

Does that go for all over the US or just where you are? (where are you btw?)

And.... I'm not talking highlights here, I mean the full game coverage.

Probably won't be much due to ESPN dropping it.They shot themselves in the foot.It will be very interesting to see how much they pissed off the fans in the States..

Reason I'm asking is, I have someone here visiting me from California right now, and she's saying that hockey is hardly ever on TV in the US. I disagree with her.

If I'm right and she's wrong, she's buying me dinner not once but TWICE this week, and I'll be making her do my laundry (which has been piling up for about 4 1/2 years now.)

Since Golf is more popular than Hockey I would say limited, unless they are hardcore fans with dishes, probably ESPN and Fox,The Hockey channel was the only way

I think ESPN shot themselves in the foot for not renewing during Sidney Crosby's rookie year. This could be a big boost for OLN if the kid has a big season.

The NHL made the right move with ESPN - Outdoor Life Network ain't ESPN but it's owned by Comcast who also own the Flyers and is in 60 million plus homes - the NHL won't be in the NBA's shadow - hockey in the U.S. is a niche sport, OLN will promote the NHL hard. ESPN isn't going to forget hockey and when this deal with OLN is done they'll be back offering the NHL more money. The OLN deal was for more money.

The NHL had been widely accessible in the U.S. for years - every team except for the Blackhawks have most every game available on a regional cable sports network - alot of them on Foxsports regional channels. Socal hockey fans can find a ton of hockey to watch - I believe the Kings are on Prime Network and have been for years.

All sports except for the NFL are becoming niche sports. The NHL's future is great now - Bettman and the owners did what had to be done. Now what's left to see is if they back up their promise to improve the way the game is officiated and played on the ice.

The only time I've ever come across hockey on TV is during the Stanley Cup. The NHL is about as popular as the LPGA. Ok, not really, but it doesn't get much coverage at all. I would side with your friend.

Some of you are obvious not hockey fans. I was more interested in hearing just how much TV coverage the NHL has gotten in the US in the past, and I'm not sure how someone who isn't interested in watching the sport would be able to answer the question with any degree of accuracy (or non-bias for that matter).

Here in Winnipeg we get our FOX channel out of Rochester NY, and I used to see quite a few games on there in past years. Was just wondering what some of you think (those that know the sport that is)

When I lived in Dallas I was able to catch all of the Stars games on tv but most of them were on the local fox channel or fox sports network. With Directv you can also order the nhl package: http://www.directvsports.com/Subscri.../NHLCenterIce/

I actually had not heard of the ESPN deal being off, I hope I still get to watch enough games.
