CRT monitors are well known for giving off dangerous levels of radiation from the back of the monitor but does anyone know what the situation is with flat screens?

Less with LCDs, but not by much. Truthfully though in studies that have been performed in this area they've shown that current CRTs generate less than 1/4th of the EMR emissions versus CRTs from 20 years ago.
