Are sites like Kazaa dead now?

http://money.cnn.com/2005/06/27/tech...ster/index.htm

The decision handed the entertainment industry a crucial victory in its battle to curb Internet piracy -- and was a big blow to technology companies, which claim that making them accountable for the illegal downloading of songs, music, video games and other proprietary products would hurt their ability to innovate.

In MGM v. Grokster, the high court unanimously overturned a ruling that had barred Hollywood and the music industry from suing Internet services used by consumers to swap songs and movies for free.

Well excuse me. Kazaa is the only one I really know about since I don't go around illegally downloading stuff. I haven't heard of the others.

It's been dead for a year or longer. It's so seeded that's it's pointless to even fool with it.

LimeWire rocks, though.

Actually Napster is alive. It's just as a paid music service now. Had amemebrship fo about 6 months until Yahoo music came out and since they charge $6.99 a month I've been trying them out.

Way to get on the A list with the feds.

You never saw the super bowl comercial with all the people that got busted for using napster? Each and every one of them paid for the service.

Do you remember where kazaa was offering 19.95 for there service.

The feds busted only those who signed up legit. Because they could pull creditcard records as proof of using the service. They could not "hack" into anyones pc or ISP to see if they where filesharing.

Good call =)

Yeah I use Limewire also, it's pretty good. Not nearly as much b.s as Kazaa had.
Bit torrents are also pretty kool.

Not to swap files. To purchase them over Napster is perfectly legal. I thought that was all the other person was saying that mentioned Napster.

There are plenty of file sharing networks out there still. Not to mention torrents, irc, and newsgroups as well.

I haven't read the ruling on this but the summaries I read on this would seem to open the door to sue Newsgroup providers as well as possibly picture content post sites such as Yahoo Groups. Not sure if it can be extended out like that, but certainly with the decision today, its alot more possible than it was yesterday.

The case was REMANDED to the lower court. They have to find CLEAR INTENT to create/distribute the software in the pursuit of COPYRIGHT INFRINGMENT.

There's no P2P involved there now at all. You just sign up and pay for the music you want to download. They have deals with big 5 music labels as well as tons of independents. If you get sued for paying to use napster then I will pay your legal bills.

Napster is no longer a file-sharing program, it's like iTunes, you actually purchase the music

Yes or if you're just a listener like me you can pay $10 a month to have access to all of the songs in their library to listen to anytime you wish. For an extra $5 you can download the music to a portable music player( except IPod ) of course Yahoo offers offers all of that for $6.99 a month, hence why I'm with them right now. If I really really like a song I have no problem forking over the 79¢ so I can burn it to a CD.
