Godfather or Apocalypse Now?

I just don't see how the Godfather should be rated higher. Honestly, "AN" has every element that a great movie would have.

Cinematography, acting, plot, deeper meaning, bigtime actors......seems to encompass them all.

I threw in the Redux version this evening and watched.

I have said for years that Apocalypse Now is the greates movie ever made by far. I just don't see any films around that have even come close.

I agree with that. All time.

I love the opening scene as well. Supposedly he really busted his hand open.

It helps that Coppola directed both. But my nod goes to AN.

No! -- did not know that. Was that covered in Heart of Darkness -- ? -- I was surprised enough to learn that Harvey Keitel, not only got the Willard role, but that production commenced with him in the role -- and Coppola decided it wasn't working -- NOW THAT'S BALLS -- not to mention commitment to one's creative vision. I see Francis at his restauant in SF all the time. Great man.

Cory, I have "Hearts of darkness" on video. I'll try (I'm from hollywood, so that doen't mean a whole lot) to make a copy for you to watch. I need to get it onto a DVD anyway since it only came out on video.

It's a documentary on AN.... FUCKIN' CRAZY what they went thru to film that. How fucked up Brando was, how drunk Martin was during the breakdown scene, and yes he did really cut himself open.

The catch phrase on the box is, "Filming was supposed to last 16 weeks. One year later it was far from over"

The horse head scene is nothing compared to a few scenes in AN. You should go rent it.

I think the Godfather was much better.

I like Apocalypse Now, however it just seemed very disjointed the first time I saw it, while Godfather was an instant classic.

I've actually watched AN more times than the Godfather (including Redux, the Director's Cut), mostly to try and comprehend it better.

I think the fact that I liked Mario Puzo's book better than Joseph Conrad's also has something to do with it.

AN is way more complex movie. Menages to pack a lot of art in 2 hours..

If you're into art movies, I seriosly recommend watching "Before the rain"

They're both really good. The fucked up thing is, they are NOT in the same category. One is mafia, one is war. They both have incredible characters and character arcs, and both are about self exploration. But they are two different movies.

They should both be #1 in their own right.

I love them both and I also agree that the helicopter scene is a classic. The atmosphere created by Ride of the Valkyries is incredible. However I would still pick Godfather above it.

Incidentally, I think Godfather 2 was better, I also really enjoyed 3 despite the universal panning it took.

I've always been a fan of Apocalypse Now. I'd take it any day over the Godfather.

But I didn't like the redux version. I felt that it didn't do the original any justice at all.

Yeah, and from that very same scene Martin Sheen suffered a near death heart attack. It's all in that aforementioned greatest documentary ever made about a movie, "Hearts Of Darkness."
