Shooting in raw -

Any of you folks shoot in raw? If so, what raw convertor software are you using? Canon and Nikon cameras usually come with their own convertor software but I've been reading that it's usually not very good stuff. There are some third party softwares that seem to do a much better job and are used heavily by pros in the mainstream world.

Just asking........

every camera is different... they each capture raw in their unique way which only their software can read ....

but the new Adobe Photoshop CS2 has signed a contract with a few of the companies: canon, olympus, and a few others.. that will allow you to run the files through them

I don't think I'll be doing a lot of raw shooting....but I do have a couple of clients that are requesting that I shoot in raw so I'm having to do some research into all this. One of my clients is wanting to be able to sell images to a magazine that's interested in publishing some of the work but the files just arn't big enough to get a quality picture. Shooting in raw should take care of that

although harddrives are cheap they take too much space. they just have the advantage that you can still play with white balance or contrast way better than with the jpeg files - with them you have to get your shit together right from the start.

but if the customer requires it we do it for sure

I'm talking about shooting my Canon 10D in "raw" mode instead of shooting jpegs (which are compressed). There's a different kind of workflow and software needed to shoot raw and that's what I was asking about in my initial post. Shooting in raw is pretty much a waste of time and effort if it's going to end up on the internet....but if the final product will be published and/or printed...raw is prolly the best way to shoot it. Also, if there's a chance that something your shooting will end up being published in the future....raw would be the way to go on that as well.

I have a couple of clients that are asking me to look into shooting raw for them. Even though their images are mostly for the net....they are looking at the big picture and some of the images may be used for other things in the future. Some may be published in magazines...some may be used for posters, dvd box covers etc..etc..etc. They also would like the ability to market the images to third parties who may have a project where they need a good image for a brochure or some other printed piece.

Do you have any problems with CS? I'm still using PS7 but have considered upgrading to CS. I've heard a lot of horror stories about how CS seems sluggish...have you experienced anything like that? What's the big difference between CS and PS7?
