Anyone on starband?

According to my "search", no.

I'm moving into an area without cable or dsl. From what I have heard business class starband is better that the directpc crap, but anybody actually have starband small ofiice or whatever its called?

The only other alternatives I have found are true business class sat vsat like galleo, but they are pricey (like $500 a month) for even a few gigs a month usage.

i've heard it sucks ass. It is still a 2 way connection so your going to have some lag. But it could still be the best that you can get for your area.

YARGH! Blast from me past. 6 years ago I couldn't get cable nets on me boat. I had starband. It totally limped me carrot. Sucked balls. Fucked sea urchins. Shit parrots.

That be 6 years ago but I doubt they got over things like rain, very slow upload, etc. You'd prolly be better off with dialup... seriously.

Been using it for years, don't expect to get anywhere near the speeds they advertise.

It's better than dialup, 2-3 times faster, but no where near a DSL or cable modem. if it's the only option I would say get it.

It does a good job for surfing the internet, but sucks if you need to do any uploading.

Anybody still using it? The new small office service sounds a lot better than the old offerings, 256 kbs upload (claimed).

The other serious alternative I found is VSAT systems, but its pricey. But they guarantee the bandwith, unmetered. The satelite is like 5G installed, ouch.

256/128 $259
256/256 $429
512/128 $369
512/256 $499

Yeah I had ISDN for a couple years. I would take it over Starband though. I don't know much about it, but don't you still upload through dialup with it?

Thesaint,

Check out this forum and see if Wireless access is near you.

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/wireless

I have talked with People who have setup wireless themselves.

I.E. The nearest dsl / cable connection was 5-10 miles away. They got a connection there then relayed the connection out so many miles with antennas which are pretty cheap...

goodgirl uses Starband, she recently upgraded to a faster modem, which she seems happy with.

Before, when I had to send her a large file I found it quicker to burn a CD and attach it to a carrier pigeon's leg and send it to her

Rain, snow, sunspots .. . you name it, Starband would fail as a result.

I don't recommend it for uploading. It may sometimes be faster then 26400 bps dial up for uploading with ftp. When you are lucky.

But small office is a little faster and downloads and some other connections. FTP still sucks, once in a great while it gets to 20 kbps. Most the time between 1-3 kbps.

You could try these guys in the states http://www.wildblue.com/ . They are using the new Telesat Anik f2 Ka band satellite. It looks like they're offering 256kbps max upload speeds but maybe they'll bump those up as you can get 500kbps from the providers in Canada. Prices are reasonable.

I had it about 4 years ago and it was the biggest piece of shit service I have ever had. It was so bad I canceled it and went back to aol dialup. haha

I'm lucky now as I have Cable and DSL in my area.
