Comparing scientology to other religions is pretty extreme. If even half of this stuff is true, it goes beyond anything I have ever learned as a child; I grew up in a pretty religious family.

Actually, I haven't even read much about their core beliefs yet, just the very basics. I'm reading about how the Church operates and how it came into existence.

Just one of the bizarre things... early in the churches establishment it received tax-exempt status from the IRS. After a few years of being tax-exempt, the IRS took away their status due to obvious tax evasion and manipulation. The Church then went on to harass, steal from, bug, and sue the IRS over many many years. Finally in the early '90s the IRS grew fed up with the constant harassment and waste of resources that they cut a deal with the Church so that they again would receive tax-exempt status if they paid a sum of $12 million in back taxes.

Several key members of the Churches "military and intelligence branch", dubbed the Guardian's Office, were arrested in the early '80s for stealing records and sabotaging several United States government buildings across the country, I believe the operation was called "Operation Snow White". Hubbard was indicted but he disappeared and was never found until his death in '86.

I'm trying to find out WHY exactly people join...

From what I'm seeing, people join during a traumatic point in their life. The Church promises various things, similar to other churches and religions. However, Scientology seems to bring people in "easily" and then raise the demands. Money, time, resources, etc. The Church demands that the members cease contact with non-members. They can't read newspapers, magazines, watch news. Everything non-Scientology is evil and they are permitted to do bad things to non-believers. Its pretty crazy.

You really need to learn the TRUE history of Scientology, and not what the scientologists tell you. Do some reading:

The Church of Scientology worships the God of the tax loophole, plain and simple.

For example, a famous rich person actor (say, someone like John Travolta) buys an airplane, donates it to the Church and then uses it whenever he wants. Instant tax write-off while still enjoying all of the benefits.

If you want to join a cult, I recommend cDc (Cult of the Dead Cow).

If it's religion you seek, then try the Church of the SubGenius.

If you really must have all the answers, than consult Cecil Adams and get the Straight Dope.

I think it's all a ploy..I think they are pulling one over on us all.. It's probably some secret "tax shelter scam" and they just come up with this crazy off the wall shit, to throw off the IRS.
In November, you can vote for America's next president or its first dictator.

I live in downtown San Diego, and there is a big ass scientology church about 4 blocks from me

I've actually been considering going to their free seminar just to see what the crazy bastards are up to.

they are a cult. I worked in Austin right up the road from a major Scientology place. Those fucking weirdos would come get coffee at my shop every morning.

You could tell when they were in the process of brainwashing a new one. The older member would not leave their side..they orderd for them..talked for them.. showed them the way. I got pissed and tried to make the poor confused girl answer me with her own answer and not that of the brainwashed sheep by her side...they didnt not like that at all.

fuck those weirdos..they tried to even recruit me till i told them to "shut the fuck up"

One of the most telling things about Scientology comes from L. Ron Hubbard himself. He once was interviewed in Reader's Digest. When asked about making a living as a science fiction writer, he replied, "If someone wanted to make real money in this world, they'd invent a religion." He and his contemporaries (Robert Heinlein for one) had experimented with this idea in some of their works (Stranger in a Strange Land). He created Scientology just to see if could get create such a religion. People will buy anything if it promises them perfect lives, right? It's the ultimate writers gag. He's laughing at us from the grave and his heirs are laughing all the way to the bank.
