The German army helmet was a superior design back in the late 30s and was shown to deflect more shell fragments, and its shape could also deflect some bullets at long range.
It also had far better prtection for the shoulders and neck due to the flares on the lower portion and the front rim was designed to keep rain out of your face..
This is pretty much the standard design today except in airborne divisions world wide with a few modifications here and there.
You asked.

The same reason many of our military vehicles look similar to German designs - lots of great German engineers out there.

You may have heard of Audi, BMW, Daimler-Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, etc.

You might be amazed to know how much German engineers have contributed to the Aerospace and Space industries.

As a footnote the germans were among the first in 1944 along with the Russians to introduce reflective armour (Armour that slant to deflect shells thus increasing crew protection) This is the main protection strong point on the Abrams M11A3 main battle tank and most other tanks world wide today.
The Germans used it on the Panther mark 1 and the Russians on the famouse T-34

Actually reactive armor/explosive armor is the main protection of the Abrams...and reactive armor is also used on Bradleys.

there would have been no NASA and flight to the moon and stuff like that without the german engineers they brought to the US after the war.

Just as the Kevlar PASGT helmet replaced the World War II M-1 Helmet, the Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH) replaced the PASGT (or Kraut) helmet in the U.S. armed services in 2004.

The Marine Corps will not adopt the ACH. They will replace their PASGT helmets with a new model in the same Kraut shape but with the improved Kevlar material.

The ACH has been criticized for its smaller size, raising fears that it will not provide enough protection for the back and sides of the head.

Good point King but reactive armour is not used on all Abrams and Bradleys it is an after thought that bolts on to the outside of the hull. I think it was invented by the Isrealis to combat shoulder fired rocket launchers.
What I meant was the designs of the hull itself utilizes a theory from the 1940s (reflective armour)
But your point is well taken.
Cheers

If you were that close, I can imagine other more effective things to do than to put your head down so that you can't see your opponent:

Then again, here is what the Doughboy's wore:

Well, at least it inspired UFO designs in the 50's (hehe).

If we had spikes on the helmets in Iraq, our guys could mount a insurgent head and freak out the locals as they drive their humvees.

Try telling that to a samurai:

I have a picture somewhere of a samurai helmet with a rabbit design on it. I can only imagine the fear that must have struck in the enemies of that dilusional warrior.
