White Punks On Dope - The Tubes Free Concert Tonight in San Jose

So I called a few of my friends and told them the Tubes are going to be playing a free Concert in the Park in San Jose tonight. They said who?

At times like that I feel old, but I talked them into coming with me anyway.

The Tubes were a cool band back in the 70's and 80's. Here is the cover of their first album (might jog a few memories):



That album had a few campy gems on it, such as Mondo Bondage, What Do You Want From Life, and their signature anthem, White Punks On Dope (in which lead singer Fee Waybill dresses as Quay Lewd/Lude).

The band was as much theater as sound, although they had a bunch of hit songs (Don't Touch Me There, Talk To You Later, and Prime Time, etc).

Anyway, I expect it will be fun...

He's probably better known in the Bay Area for playing piano for the Grateful Dead from 1990-1995, but yeah, Vince Welnick was a founding member of the Tubes.

Here is an excerpt of an interview with Vince talking about the early days of the Tubes:

Interviewer: The Tubes were a really rowdy band.

VW: Totally. We made our girls wear nothing but G-strings, and electrical tape over their nipples, so it looked like ?censored? marks. We wound up marrying a few of them -- not me, but other members of the band. We made them ?respectable,? but we were very sexist.

We were an equal opportunity offender. We offended everybody, including ourselves, which was what White Punks on Dope was all about. It wasn?t really us, because we weren?t rich white punks on dope. We were hanging out with rich white punks on dope, who took us as mascots, so we wrote it about them. We knocked a lot of things, and people.

I saw the Tubes do a New Year's concert once (at the tiny San Jose Civic), complete with topless women on trapeze bars and total chaos on stage - staged chaos, but chaos nonetheless.

I'm expecting them to be a lot more toned down tonight, but who knows?

The weather this time of year in San Jose is usually nice - we often don't experience much, if any rain, from May until September, but today was cloudy with some showers.

For awhile it seemed like the Tubes show might have to be cancelled...but close to show time the weather took a turn for the better, and although it was still cloudy and windy, the show went on.

Lot's of cool new tunes, and many of the classics.

I brought my video camera along and managed to capture some of it...

Video can use up lots of bandwidth, but I thought I would share this little 6-minute edited segment with any Tubes fans here on GFY.

Keep in mind that it is a 65Mb .mov (Quicktime) video, so you will need to have the free Quicktime plug-in installed to view it, plus a fast connection.

I won't leave it up for long, because as much as I like sharing, the download bandwidth can get massive fast.

I love Nina Hagen. I have some import albums of her's, including some re-mixes. Haven't listened to them in awhile, so I'll have to check them out again.
