With all due respect, I'm not sure about your conclusion. Many of the industrial giants of the Philippines--Sy, Tan, Gokongwei, Ty, etc. were poor Chinese immigrants or first generation Filipino-Chinese who went from rags to riches. Indeed, Chinese are so dominant economically in Southeast Asia that this has led to historic ethnic strife (Indonesia and Malaysia, most notably). I don't think they can achieve such a standing by being lazy.

They do tend to place a higher premium on education, but this is because the only way for ordinary people to get anywhere in China is through exam scores. When these people come to the west where things are slanted more towards effort, by and large they struggle.
