Great post AsiaWebDivas.

I've been really reluctant to purchase my first guitar. As, I'm hoping my John Lennon/Beatles appreciation phase shall subside/fade. It has yet too, nor do I think I will. Hence, I'm starting to think the only way to truly satisfy my thirst, is to play their music. And of course, eventually my own. So - your post sort of gave me a reminded, that I should pick up the guitar and get my fucking ass moving.

Find a teacher that will teach you the style of music you like. Don't learn jazz if you really want to play metal. Don't learn blues if you really want to play punk... Don't play acoustic if you really want to play electric

Next, do not buy any guitar that costs less than 200 dollars. THey are unplayable garbage and will only frustrate you.

I'm really thinking of acoustic guitar... :) And I've already found a friend who will show me some basics for a start.

I've got one favourite song - artist is Valeriy Didiulya and the title is "Day".
It's flamenco style.

I really like this style. :thumbsup

And of course I stand for acoustic guitar. :winkwink:

Afte playing for MANY years.. man I feel old saying that... I can honnestly say I can hold my own in any band situation, Jazz excluded.. waaaaaay too much theory for my patience level. With NO LESSONS or ANY TRAINING! Lessons are for kids who don;t realy want to play and parents forced them into it OR those who want to play so badly but lack self discipline and the ability to differenciate differences in note tones. I taught myself by listening to music I liked. I would sit there and pick out single notes until I got the right 'sound' to match the music played. I then got a guitar tuner, then learned what a power chord is... it all went from there.

All you need to know is this... the root note and what a power chord is, from there you can work anything out and learn YOUR way. The thing with lessons is the instructor has his own way of playing and learning which may not suite you at all.

Once you have mastered chugging along to your fav tunes with basic power chords and basic open chords, A,B,C,D,E,F and G go buy a tabulature book of your favorite band and chug along at your own pace learning the songs.

before you know it you'll start absorbing everything.

Ah, one HUGE piece of advice. Get one that plays nice. Too many people buy cheap acoustics that are hard to play because of high string action and get discouraged. Stay away from no-name brands unless they are backed by Gibson/Epiphone or Fender and Cort. You could get away with paying $200-$300 for a decent beginer guitar that will be a joy to play.

try www.ultimate-guitar.com,they give you the latest songs(mostly rock) and have online lessons, you can get your favourite band and thats where i started playing, most of the tabs are difficult to understand at first but if your commited, you'll work it out eventually.
all the best!

One thing,. don't fret (no pun intended) over solos. You won't nail them now, tomorow or next year. Concentrate on the rythm for now.

Get a friend or guitar teacher to get you started. All you'll need is maybe 6-8 lessons and you can either play on your own after that or continue with lessons. You'll learn the fundamentals like being able to tune your guitar properly for starters :)

Friends of mine were in bands and I loved that they could play the songs I listened to. It just so happened there was a great guitarist that lived a block from me and he was offering lessons. I did a one hour lesson once per week for 7-8 weeks and just went on my own after that figuring out stuff and using guitar magazines.

I was doing it for fun, not to be an amazing guitarist. If I wanted to be really good, I would have continued with the lessons. The guy that was teaching me had been in bands, he was amazing. He was in university and I was in first year of highschool so he was a young guy like me and we would trade cd's and stuff. When I was quiting, he was getting heavily into Flaminco guitar playing. The guy was incredible.

If you have the desire, you'll learn, and hopefully you'll discover something original.

This would be enough to inspire me. Then I'd lose my nut and my interest would waiver. Unfortunately, the music talent went to my bro :(
