29% of Europeans Claims Sun Rotates Around Earth!!!

A recent survey among Europeans on their scientific knowledge has shown that 29% claim that the sun rotates around Earth. 4% didn't know.

Even worse, when asked how much time the Earth takes to rotate fully around the sun 17% answered 1 month, 16% didn't know.

Isn't that ridiculous? I mean how stupid could you really be?
I'm just happy Holland was among the top 3 of best answers with a 74% score, Sweden topped the chart with 79%.

Cyprus scored the worst with only 49%... candidate for the EU Turkey participated too and scored a sad 44%

Try the same survey in the US, or even Canada. You'll get quite similar results.

I would expect Norway to be in the top 3, anything else would be a complete lie, or mis-interpretation of the facts. So there...

This article provides a synopsis and some comments about the PISA results. (See the full PISA report resource as well.)
"For the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) assessment known as PISA (Program for International Student Assessment), the membership organization of industrialized governments tested a total of 265,000 students in 28 of the industrialized nations that are members of the compact, as well as Brazil, Latvia, Liechtenstein, and Russia. The tests included sections on literacy, mathematics, and science. Unlike other international assessments, which focus on topics covered in classroom curricula, PISA examined students' ability to apply their knowledge in real-life situations...The United States scored near the international average in all three subjects on the tests, which were administered last year."

the funny thing is if you studied the theory of relativity, you would understand that it's all relative. the sun DOES rotate around the earth if you look at it from the earth's coordinate system.

and the "how long does it take" question is also relative. it depends who's telling

It was a survey done by the European Union, I'm still trying to find an English link to the results but for now I just translated it from this Dutch news article:

Everybody rags on Americans. Canadians usually do comparable to Americans on a whole host of studies. If this study was done on Americans and Canadians the results would probably be similar.

Considering the Vatican didn't apologise and admit that Galileo was right until 1983 this doesn't surprise me.
