how does he know that he got x amount of hits from one file and y hits from another file, if he just puts a watermark of a url on every image?

Its how many hits he got TO A FILE.

Now you cant track those stats, unless you have a diff domain per each file. Which you usually dont.

Tracking between files doesn't even really matter. Do you think spammers insert tracking IDs in the links within the 8 million they send out in one sitting?

If traffic is down, just create more files, rather than trying to optimize the ones you are serving. It'd probably be more trouble than its worth to try to analyze and optimize your efforts even if there were a way to track it down to the individual file.

If you want some sort of statistics, you could try subdomains if you don't want to pay $8 a pop for new domains.

these are the stats form his p2p client - they show that
file#1 was downloaded 1500 times
file#2 was downlaoded 1345 times
etc

He took care of the old 1997 trick, there is 2 trick you can use again. Just need to read the fine print in Media Player manual. If you read carefully, you will notice you can use a banner rotator in real time direct inside your movies pulled direct from your server. If 100k of your videos are shared over p2p , you can modify banners in real time on all of them. You can also open console, etc etc

Lime is indexed by sha1, although I'm sure they do some additional, unreported checking for blatantly duplicate crap like this.

Problem with P2P is pulling the traffic and getting them on Webpages that sell them and ultimatly provide ya with a sign up.

At the very least, you could send them to a popup/autoinstaller laden page and still make money, if it was blind traffic. It costs almost nothing to generate this kind of traffic, even if it is complete crap.

true, and also when we speak about image files (10k-100k) these are huge files compared to '101010101' so it is VERY unlikely that two different images will have the exact same size to the very last bit.

Many p2p apps use this or another algorithm (md5), which are both collision resistant enough from a spammers perspective to be considered identical.

chm, catchy file names, thousands of instances in your shared folder (just add a word or two so they are not seen as duplicates)

Well I've been using P2P drm advertising for awhile and admittedly the traffic is worse than other sources.

I use two affiliaites. Smashbucks which is converting at around 1:650 and AFF which is around 1:400 (including rebills so that ratio is probably a bit worse).

These numbers are based on unique IP click-thrus. I have around a 1:8 click-thru rate.

So not the best traffic out there, but not worthless either.
