My Son Graduate PreSchool today...

I have an amazing son. He's really the light of my life. I can't imagine life without him. He just gives the world a whole different outlook. His innocence and intelligence inspire me.

And he's so well loved. He's given plenty of affection from his entire family: me, his mother, his grandparents, aunt's, uncles... everyone adores him.

I spoil him to death but you wouldn't know it to be around him. I've had so many people remark about what a great kid he is. In his 5 and a half years of life he's never thrown a fit. Not even once. And I've never once raised my voice to him. Ever. Most parents don't like to take the time to do the right thing by their children.

---
Let me digress a bit and tell you what I mean by that:

* my son (whoops, almost wrote his name - I'd rather keep that private) has NEVER been told by me, "because I said so"... that's just not in my vocabulary with him... Things are explained and he is always given a reason "why".

* in public, I don't humiliate him by correcting him out loud. I call him to me and whisper in his ear. This keeps him from getting embarrassed. It's simply not necessary to embarrass a child. What does it prove to show "I'm the adult so I'm in charge?" Seriously!

* When I have something to say to him, especially when correcting him, I get down on my knees and talk to him at HIS eye level. This shows respect to him even though he doesn't realize it. And I talk to him in a level voice free of any "attitude".

There are many other things that have contributed to this kid's great demeanor. But those are what comes to me off the top of my head. Doing things this way is a lot more work than how many raise their children, but it really pays off. In fact, my own parents have told me they've taken lessons from how my ex-wife and I raise our son. They've literally changed the way they interact with children after seeing how we handle my little buddy.

The things I mentioned above lets a kid know he's really, truly wanted and not a bother. I fucking hate hearing parents yell at their children. Don't they know what that does to a child's self esteem?
---

Anyway... my son (name almost slipped again... had to go back and correct that) graduated from PreSchool today. He was born in December so he'll be almost 6 when he starts Kindergarten later this year (same situation with me). He's such a smart kid and I was so proud to see his ceremony today. But at the same time I felt a bit of sadness. Time is marching on. He's growing up. Soon he'll be to the age where he won't want the other kids to see him give dad a goodbye kiss or a hello hug.

But today I just enjoyed his first stepping stone on the road to education. Damn, he swells my chest. I could not possibly be prouder...

He got what he calls a "fire bike". It's a brand new bike with flames painted on the sides. It's cool. Took lots and lots of pics.

"Nothing more proud than being a parent" is absolutely right on. There is nothing better, period.

Congrats. But 5.5 year olds and graduating from pre-school? I hope that was a typo. I was in the first grade at that age and being a perfect kid too.

Kindergarten starts at age 5 and depending on what month the child was born they may start at almost 6. I started in September at age 5 (to turn 6 in December of that same year) because of my date of birth. My son is facing the same situation. He's a December baby.

That means December of his senior year he'll turn 18, as I did.

What a wonderful post. Having a father who I haven't spoke to in almost a decade and haven't seen in 15 years, that really warmed my heart. I wish I had a dad so proud of me when I was growing up...I imagine how different my life could have been.

Congrats to your little fella, and to you for giving the job of fatherhood the attention it warrants.

That's great to hear.. children are so incredibly special. The fact that schools organize events like this only make for more great memories of your children.

You mean your son spent the required amount of time in pre school? Great news then!

My dinner will be graduating from my ass tomorrow morning.

To be honest, I think kids sometimes are better served by some discipline. If you want to fit them into our society, being his peer in every case doesn't work imo.
