:stop Web1000 hit the PERFECT online adult business model! Sheer genius!

Back in 98 I had a site on their free host, which after developing I bought a domain for and moved to paid hosting. I replaced the index and a couple of other main pages with notices of the new addy and deleted the rest of the site. This left Web1000 with all of the 404 traffic, which is their business model. I was cool with that and went about rebuilding my link trades with the new URL.

Although the site has never been a "traffic magnet" it is narrowly niched, has exclusive content and converts nicely those that come from a search engine.

Recently Google traffic on this site tanked. While doing a search on my keywords I discovered that Web1000 had revived all of the URLs from the old site (including even menu frame URLs). In Google these results show excerpts from my text from the old pages, my old link trades, my optimized META keywords & descriptions, the works. It looks just like all of my old pages spidered, but every one of them are actually redirects to a paysite. Of course Google thinks all of these need to be at the top of the listings while pushing the first mention of the real site searched for by name to the bottom of the 6th page (preferences set to 100 results per page).

In Yahoo, the site still comes up in the first position when searched for by name (even without quotation marks) and none of these Web1000 gateway spam pages are listed. Hopefully this won't change...

I thought the free host biz model was always to steal the traffic, not steal intellectual property

You're saying that web1000 got your old pages back from a backup or some other way and put them back online? Seems like intellectual property theft to me.

Yep, but they didn't put my content back up... When you see the links at google they are my old URLs, titles, keywords, descriptions, etc. but when you click on them they all redirect to a paysite.

Sounds like some cloaking to me. Whats in the Google cache?

The caches of the pages are the original pages.

Also included in the links are pages that were always behind an AVS and never listed in Google prior. The cache of those pages go to the original pages (there are no pics archived in the cache of the gallery). However the Google listings shows my gallery/AVS pages text before you click on them and go to the paysite they are redirecting to.

Unless it was in their TOS that they're allowed to do this, and that's very possible.
Nobody reads those 4 page long TOS's anyways

From their FAQ:

Do my pages become your property?
No. We don't claim any rights to the content of your site.

From their TOS:

COMPANY Retains The Rights To Any And All Materials It Places In Its Retained Space; The Original Owner Retains The Rights To Any And All Materials YOU Upload.

I should add that at some point awhile back I noticed a couple of the main pages revived in Google and I replaced them with a "Site has moved to:" message. Those pages do have my "moved" message with their large ad under it, but the Google listings have text and titles from the original pages I replaced, so these were actually "revived" from a backup twice.

I'm not technical enough to understand what happened here but I'll bug Ray about it tomorrow. When we took over Web1000 we had to back up the entire database and move it to the new NOC so I'm wondering if anything old got brought back when we brought the copy online in the new location.

I can say with absolute certainty there was nothing in our plans to revive pages purposly to bring about traffic or anything of the sort. Hopefully Ray will have an idea of what would have caused this...

Hm, my old web1000 site also turns up on first page of google for my url/ sitename, still it's pointing to the main page with a "moved to" message. But the url pointing from google is from a links list called buckspipe... I can't remember but I must've submitted the web1000 site there, or they borrowed another links list database...

I wouldn't even mind the old pages being brought back online... Just not my text and keywords coming back but leading elsewhere...

Also, if I type in the index page URL it goes straight to the paysite. My FTP login isn't working, so I can't see if it that a redirect or a replacement. I still have a ton of backlinks out there leading to that address.

Heck, if this gets fixed and Web1000's service is better than the old ownership I might even throw some content back up on the page... since Google obviously likes you guys
