$10,000,000 sold Bank of Americe the office furniture for their new UK offices in South London. Installation over three years, 6 weeks after the last desk went in they decided to close the office and phoned us asking if we would like to buy it back.

We declined.

I earned $80,000 over the three years from the sale. Not a lot but the credibility it gave us and the furniture was worth a lot more.

This was 1981 to 1984

with $80 000 back in 1981 - 1984 you could probably buy a small house in London, now you can only buy 2 rolls double ply toilet paper with that money

That's an interesting story, Paul.

My grandfather had contracts with furniture manufacturers all over the U.S. and sold primarily to major universities around the country.

The man sold millions of $'s of furniture that filled buildings upon buildings at a time - dorm rooms, class rooms, offices, etc.

On top of whatever he made on the sale of the furniture he'd charge like 3 - 4 times his actual cost for installation. I remember seeing an invoice on his desk one time for 180K for a deal at Rutgers University - I asked him what it cost him to hire the crew to do the work for him - and he said "about 60K"!

I can only imagine how much he made from selling the furniture!!!

About 5 years ago he donated a wing/pavillion to NYU Medical Center.

The old guy is definitely one of my heros!
