whats colocated hosting, + is managing a server difficult?

Questions:
1) whats colocated hosting (whats the difference with dedicated etc.)
2) I never managed a server myself. But with the new 2257 shit i was just checking for a host in holland, and i found one but it aint managed dedicated hosting, u have to manage it yourself. Is this hard to do?
Im now on virtual hosting at Oxeo now and for every problem or whatever i hit em up on icq and they solve it for me, its perfect. Will it be hard for a guy like me who doesnt know jack shit of the technical server things?

dont even think about it, colocating is housing your personal server(s) at the DC. As for managing it, you will fuck it up in about 4 seconds flat.

Dedicated=you have dedicated the rest of your life to your server

colocated=server is owned by you and you are stuck with it and all its problems for the rest of the servers life

If you have to ask about managing them yourself, or colocating, then that is a clear indication that you need to pay somebody else to do it for you.

Colo - you own the server and lease rack space and bandwidth.
Server Management - If you know nothing about server administration, I advise you NOT to "wing it". You can find reasonably priced admins here and on hosting forums that'll do this or that for reasonable fees.

You could probably get a decent server admin for a couple hundred a month. There are a few services I've seen around, can't recall their names offhand. Don't go too cheap, it will cost you more in the long run.

When i take dedicated hosting at my present host, they will maintain it. You know just like my virtual account: problems? hit em up on icq and they will solve it instantly.

But since oxeo is US based, i need some options for outside-US hosts in case its really gonna get heated with those new 2257 rules (u never know).

Right now my virtual hosting account got 150gb transfer per month, and for now its good.
If anyone knows any hosts outside the US with virtual hosting, or dedicated hosting for a decent price, post them here (could make a new topic but fuck it).

But i dont want dedicated hosting where i have to do everything myself - judging by the replies i got i dont even wanna start trying it - so it has to be a host with good 24/7 support, by icq or w/e, or phone doesnt matter.

There are so many things that can go wrong with a dedicated server, that unless you are proficient with linux, its best to hire someone else who does know what to do in each of those situations.

I might be biased here, but noone proved me wrong so far.
The best thing is to get hosting and server admin from different places.
Generally hosting co's don't have much to do with servers besides setting them up.
They'll do general tasks on it, but that only when they're asked to do so.
As for hosting in europe, if you look over the last 2 pages on gfy you'll prolly find a lot
of names.

Painfully accurate descriptions there.

i have been a system admin and security consultant for 7 years outside of adult.

i wouldnt trust a single hosting company with my box.

because i know they have no clue what is going on. security wise. look at all the mishaps you have seen. plain and simple.

trust me if you dont know what you are doing get someone to do it for you.

Not all hosting companies are like that, we personally harden each and every box we host. We also build and maintain load balanced Linux clusters for some of our clients and our own stuff. There are hosts that know what they are doing, they just dont charge the rock bottom prices everyone is looking for, but as the old addage goes "You get what you pay for"

How much storage space needed . I can give you the 150 gigs a month,Cpanel hosted in Canada. Cheaper than dedicated, and forget coloc in your case,

I take care of the server ( Zend library, Imagemagik, curl... etc ) and issues but if you install a script and you fuck up, that is not included....
Let me know how many $$$ you expect to pay. If acceptable, I can set you up as soon as today.

Agreed. As with previous suggestions let your hosting company doing hosting and your admin company do admin work. If you don't have one, hit me up.
