Two Killed In Crash At California Speedway

Damn, aint that a $400k car?

http://www.nbc4.tv/news/4562562/detail.html

The 2005 Porsche Carrera GT went out of control, left the inside track and careened onto the grass, hit a barrier and caught fire at 10:40 a.m. Thursday, San Bernardino County officials said.

The passenger, Corey Nicholas Rudl, 34, died at the scene. The driver, Benjamin Miles Keaton, 39, was airlifted to Loma Linda University Hospital, where he died about an hour later, according to the county coroner's office.

The La Jolla men were not burned but died of crash injuries, Supervising Deputy Coroner Randy Emon said.

Both men were wearing helmets and safety belts but the car was doing more than 100 mph when it crashed, authorities said.

"The driver's side was in good shape, but the passenger side was obliterated," Emon said.

The accident occurred while the track was being rented by the San Diego chapter of the Ferrari Owners Club, speedway spokesman Dennis Bickmeier said.

Clubs commonly use the speedway when professional races aren't going on, he said.

The men are the fourth and fifth fatalities at California Speedway since it opened in 1997.

Fontana is 55 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

The car doesn't look that bad for hitting a concrete barrier.

What I can't understand is why they dont make it mandatory for every car running on a trackday to have a 6 or even 8 point roll cage WELDED into the car. And while they're at it, they should make it mandatory to have bucket seats with 4 point harnesses. Helmets don't do jack shit if you hit a wall at 100 mph, a 4 point harness and bucket seat will keep you snug in your seat, while a regular seat and regular seatbelt will allow you to launch forward incredibly fast, only to be stopped instantly by the seatbelt locking. Poor guys died of internal injuries that should have been avoided by the track having proper safety protocols. I mean, anyone who can afford a GT3 can afford to have it properly prepped for track days.

Edit: And if car companies started putting roll cages into cars from the factory, a hell of alot less people would be dying.

It was a Carrera GT, i doubt the dude wanted to ruin it with a rollcage etc. It's like the problems they have at the Nurburgring, if you have a fast car and you want to drive it fast, you go to a track, thats the safest place - but nowhere can still be completely safe.

terrible to hear, but at least they were responsible enough to do their racing where it should be done, and not on the streets, where someone else could have gotten hurt or killed, too.

None of you guys know who Corey Rudl is?

He is one of the founding and pioneers in Internet Marketing -- Many of his techniques are standard today.

It's all over the marketing blogs and news - Very sad.

i'm sorry that they were both idiots - weeeeeeeeeeee - i go fast in my car car! waste of lives.

guarantee you if you could ask the ghosts of people who died young from things like this and drugs if they could have another shot at life but they couldn't be reckless and stupid they'll take the deal. Death is nothingness.

1 - sad fro the people he knew - really - not a way to die
2 - I have ben racing for the last 12 years, so what i dont understand is why is there a concreet wall they can drive in to?.. that is a pretty damm unsafe track.. There are no racetracks without a sandbox around every turn the places i have been ( denmark, germany, sweden, holland, norway or brittan)

That sucks big time. I used to teach a racing school there a couple of years ago.
its a fun place, but doing 190 mph can get you out of control.

Damn, I just got this email
Dear David,

I am very sad to report that an Internet marketing pioneer has passed on.

Corey Rudl died last night in a racing accident in San Jose, California. He was killed instantly when his Porsche struck a barrier.

Although I never had the opportunity to personally meet Corey, I had a great deal of respect for him, as he was a true marketing genius.

Corey was only 34 years old and was just recently married. Please remember his wife and family in your prayers and take a moment of silence to remember Corey and to be thankful for all he has done for the Internet community. He will be greatly missed.

If you would like to send his family and/or staff your condolences, the mailing address is:

1123 Fir Ave
Blaine, WA
98230

Sincerely,

Shelley Lowery

RIP
