You're desperate to promote this as a win for Canada because you're Canadian, and you're hoping that this somehow reflects well upon you.

Yes, I'm aware that I have hurt your feelings, and as a result you will resort to calling me names. It's OK, it's a natural response when people are backed into a corner with the truth. :winkwink:

Q. Who boasts most about the achievements of his country?
A. Those who haven't ever achieved anything themselves.

No what you said is everyone in the thread was irrational and nationalistic and furthermore that it wasn't a win for canada..

I think what your trying to say is, the tv is wrong and the website is wrong , and it doesnt say MISS CANADA - UNIVERSE on the website as the winner , and the tv reported the wrong winner. The website must be run by a bunch of bandwagon jumping nationalists damn them !!!! :1orglaugh

Canada has like 100th the population so if we had 1/100 the success we are doing a ton better.

Im not sure where your getting your facts about canadians from , but gfy is not a representation of canada , just as gfy is not a representation of russians ..

I think most contests are geared this way though aren't they ??

Name any contest that represents countries that every person on the team/player was born and raised in the country of origin . ( not many )

Its different, if you are to say all Canadian women are hot, because Miss Universe represented canada its a lie. This proves taht Russian women are hot because she is Russian by nationality.

Yes, they are, and for good reason. It works because it taps into humans desire to be part of something larger than themselves to promote their own personal significance. It's not just Canadians, it would be the same for whatever country's citizen won.

Rich 05-31-2005 01:06 PM

Did someone say something about Gretzky?

digi 05-31-2005 01:06 PM

This is one of the dumbest topics Ive seen on GFY. A whole nation will be happy if someone representing them wins something, if its sports or miss universe doesnt matter. It doesnt mean general canadiens take credit for her win, they are just happy she won. Its just like when parents are proud when their kid is doing something special or great.

I'm not sure if you read it before, but my reason for generalizing was to ensure maximum effect when poking into the inferiority complex that infests Canadian culture. It appears it worked as predicted.

People who go out of their way to proclaim that this is a win for Canada and Canadians do so probably because they have a desire to be part (take credit) of something larger than themselves in order to promote their own personal significance.

In contests like these though, a contestant MUST represent a country, they are not there as individuals but as a REPRESENTATIVE of a specific country (hence why it's Miss Universe). If Natalie had wanted to represent Russia, I'm sure she could have chosen to do so since she was born in Russia. She may NOT have chosen to come to Canada, but as soon as she turned 19 and decided to stay in Canada as an adult, THEN she is CHOOSING to be Canadian.

Perhaps SHE takes pride in being Canadian (omg, is it possible?! :winkwink: ) ... yknow, there shouldn't be anything wrong with being patriotic as long as you're not hurting anyone in the process. And sure, the cheesiness of these contests may hurt SOME people, but all in all it's a harmless bit of fun that really doesn't deserve a thread THIS long.. but LOL, this IS GFY.. :upsidedow

Besides, what's wrong with wanting to be a part of something bigger than yourself? So people shouldn't enjoy the success of their countrymen/women now? :helpme

Great post Ruth.

Threads like this do serve one purpose though.... they tend to draw out idiots like Brisk who have poor sucky attitudes, and they tend to draw out good people who have things in proper perspective, like you. :D

I have the best attitude because I celebrate her.

You have a self-serving attitude because you celebrate it as a win for your country.

The difference is that you try to be a winner by association, whereas I give her full credit for her accomplishments.

More utter stupidity from you. Unreal.

Dewd, you are unreal.

I celebrate her win for her and for the country she represented in the competition, that country being CANADA.

Has nothing to do with me personally. Aside from the fact that I am a fellow Canadian, her win is about her and the country.

Wouldn't it be great if I could be happy about that and not have some cocky fucktard with a shit attitude running his beak off about it? Brisk, if you can't see how you're making yourself look like a complete assknocker here you're dumber than I think you are. :1orglaugh

Im guessing your using the same flawed logic to come to that conclusion :) Like the logic you used to exclude canadians.

Your reason for generalizing is because you wanted maximum effect when you generalize. ? that makes no sense in reality land :1orglaugh

All i got out of this thread is you have a hard-on for canadian's all that shows to me is YOU have an inferiority complex. :2 cents: but your free to fantasize otherwise :)

I think any sane individual knows canada as the most unpretentious people on the planet.

Because you didn't understand the point being made doesn't mean I suck at debate.

I'm pointing out that humans have a tendency to want to be part of something larger than themselves, and so begins the nationalistic bandwagon jumping we see, in this case it's Canadians, because a Canadian won, but the same would be true of plenty other countries if someone from their country won.

Yes, and obviously there are exceptions to the rule, but IMO a part of defining Canadian culture is understanding the shared inferiority complex that Canadians have towards America. I've seen it in other countries too, Ireland towards the UK, New Zealand towards Australia.

Sin 05-31-2005 09:13 PM

I don't know if you're Canadian or not, but what I do know is that the West Coast & most Canadians I talk to these days, have anything BUT an inferiority complex towards the US. Bush is making a laughingstock of the USA, to put it nicely, and most all the Canadians I know, can't help but laugh at America boasting about being the "Land of the Free" --They're anything but these days.

That "laughing at America" is the inferiority complex. Taking any opportunity to cut down and belittle America is the inferiority complex at work.

and don't get me wrong, I don't think Canada is inferior to America, but I do think part of Canadian culture is defined by its shared inferiority complex towards America.
