If I buy a normal HD and a cheap Firewire case...
... is it the same as buying one of those Firewire HDs which prices are obscene?

yes.. it should work fine.. the difference is that some of the premade ones have extra software and functionality.. for example some of the maxtors have a one touch backup system.. (don't know how it works)
