What do you know about the Atkins diet?

I just started on it. I really didn't have a choice; my wife started today and there's nothing else to eat in the house but diet food (i.e. steak, real butter, salads, hamburger, cheese etc. etc.)

It's actually not much of a change for me except I'm cutting out bread, sugar in my coffee and the occasional cookie or chocolate bar.

I'm really going to miss the bread.

So, who else is on this and what do you know/think about it? Does anyone know about the effects of this diet on diabetes, or possible side-effects? I'm reading conflicting reports about the healthiness/unhealthiness of this diet.

I'm a little baffled that I'm now being told that fruit is bad but bacon is good for my heart and will help me lose weight? :O

    WTF?!

One of the draw backs about the Atkins Diet, is that you will end up with bad breath. If you do some research, you will find this to be true.

Eat some carbs once every 5-7 days or you'll feel like shit.

Have a weekly pizza day or something or make some pasta
                once a week.

Just an FYI heart attacks were never known in the uS until
refined foods were eaten. Before that bacon and eggs and meat
was the diet and not too many got heart attacks or cancer !

I don't use insulin; I haven't actually been diagnosed with diabetes. Due to the fact that I'm not actually a Canadian citizen, seeing a doctor here is fairly expensive for me. What I know for sure is that I have a problem with blood sugar:
                    1. Large doses of sugar put me to sleep and sometimes make me feel ill (1 deep-fried glazed apple fritter will do it).
                    2. When I need to eat, I have to eat right away or I start feeling weak and nauseous; I also get extremely irritable.

I've been on this diet for less than a day and I already have a lot more energy. I can't say that the same will hold true tomorrow; I haven't researched it.

You should have your own show on FOX because you don't know anything about the subject you are talking about.

Dr. Atkins slipped on the ice and hit his head. He was in a coma and as a result had a large amount of fluid retention just before he died.

See, I didn't even know Dr. Atkins was dead. I just got through reading a transcript of a live IRC chat session with him and thought he held them regularly. :-/

Some people get bad breath some don't. Just from my group of friends who tried Atkins only about 30% had it.

                            What do the critics say?
Many nutrition experts disagree with the basic premise of the Atkins Diet?the notion that high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets cause obesity. For evidence of the implausibility of the Atkins Diet, some nutritionists point out that the traditional Japanese diet is very high in carbohydrates, low in protein, and very low in fat; however, before the introduction of high-fat and high-protein Western foods, being overweight was rare in Japan. Such findings make sense because ounce for ounce, carbohydrates contain far fewer calories than do fats. These critics blame the overconsumption of calories (from any source) and lack of physical activity as the primary causes of obesity.

Depending on the foods chosen by the dieter, the diet may contain a large amount of saturated fat and cholesterol, putting those at risk for heart disease in danger. Recent research has found that high-protein diets speed up the progression of hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), the main cause of heart attacks. Moreover, contrary to Atkins? claims, extremely low-fat diets have been found to partially reverse heart disease.
I don't think the guy's a quack, but he may have been trying too hard.

This is going to take some research. I don't want to kill myself by skipping toast.

Well the research i have done on Atkins and what i've seen from others is, it really drains your energy and leaves you feeling tired most of the time. It also makes your blood pressure sky rocket. This of course can depend on the individual and there must be some reason why it is so popular, but i wouldn't look as Atkins as some miracle diet that doesn't have any drawbacks. So i suggest you test it out with a little waryness.

With regard to safety factors, there were no adverse effects on cholesterol and triglyceride levels. On the contrary, in one study the Atkins diet was more effective than the low-fat diet for improving triglyceride levels. Other laboratory tests, however, suggested that long-term use of the Atkins diet could increase the risk of kidney stones and osteoporosis. Furthermore, one study found a 2.2% reduction in bone density after only six weeks on the diet.
Goddamit, I don't think my wife did enough research on this diet. I'm skeptical myself.

Still, I've got to see what the advocates have to say about all this...

Atkins will be rough for the first 2-3 weeks, More than likely your wife or you will stick to it if you do a lot of physical activities, When your body is switching from burning carbs to fat you loose all energy you feel like shit, I made it to week three and i was like my god i cant stand this no more so i drank a big red and i was like super man on crack

From what i read you cant even eat salad or certain cheeses, Because when going through the inital atkins transition you have to only consume a maxium of 20? carbs in a day which is less than whats in a normal can of soda, pretty much your stuck on meats, barely any vegies because most contain natural sugars and any starch foods..

Stick to it for the first 2 weeks and see how you feel at the end of it

You may feel a bit crappy sometime between day 3 and 5 as your body adjusts to low carb intake then as your body goes into ketosis (fat burning mode) your energy should shoot up, also a big part of this is if you feel hungry then go eat something!

My blood sugar came under control in the first 10 days and it's been fine ever since, my blood pressure and cholesterol levels came right down within 3 months.

You should read the book thoroughly or start by going to the Atkins website.

                                                  Good luck.

Nope, he died of a head injury:

                                                        http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/...atements_x.htm
It is also clear that my husband's death resulted from a serious head injury that occurred April 8th, 2003. Hospital records obviously and unequivocally detail the unfortunate clinical course that transpired following arrival of Emergency Medical Services through the entirety of hospitalization, confirming that after losing consciousness en route to the hospital, Robert's condition failed to improve despite emergency neurosurgical treatment for bleeding within his head. In life, Dr. Atkins was adamant about not wanting life support and when his wishes were honored, and ventilator life support was withdrawn on April 17th, he passed away as has been widely reported in the media.
The urban legend that he died of a heart attack is a transparent attempt to discredit the diet.

                                                        I'm after the truth...
Sleep well, and dream of large women.

If your going to a fast food place for low carb stuff youre pretty much a fucking idiot because it usally isnt low carb as they say

Actually I'm supposed to eat about 4 cups of salad a day. :-/

WHoops, back up: Fiber is a carbohydrate BUT it inhibits carb absorption ? something like that so
Total carbs minus carbs from fiber = net carbohydrates.
So if lettuce has 2 grams of carbs but 1 gram of it is fiber, the net carbohydrate count for a serving of lettuce would be 1 gram.

If your going to a fast food place for low carb stuff youre pretty much a fucking idiot because it usally isnt low carb as they say
i know a lot about atkins. i also know how people use it. people arent 50lbs overweight from eating chicken and vegetables all the time. maybe the people you know do it the correct way, but the ones ive known to go on the low carb diet use it as an excuse to eat total shit. when they lose weight it becomes programmed into their brains that this is the correct food to eat and they fuck themselves over in the end. id say about 75% of the people on low carb diets are only on it by word of mouth rather then reading the book and understanding it completely. "you mean i can have bacon and hamburgers for every meal and lose weight? sign me up!"

btw, if people werent buying the lowcarb shit from fastfood places they'd stop selling it.

Fact: Too many people believe this untruth simply because it has been repeated so often that even intelligent health professionals assume it must have been reported somewhere.

But the fact is that it has never been reported anywhere. No one has as yet produced a study for review, or even cite a specific case in which a diet high in protein causes any form of kidney disorder. The only remotely related phenomenon is the fact that when someone is already suffering from far-advanced kidney disease, it is difficult for that person?s body to handle protein. But protein has nothing to do with the cause of the kidney problem.
