Honestly how bad is the traffic in or around Los Angeles?

and I used to commute from NJ to Queens on a daily basis

everyday LA traffic sucks worse than going up the Major Deegan to the GWB while there is a friggin Yankee game that night

Yes listen to baddog. Traffic here sux except from the hours of 3am to 5am, but then you have to deal with Cal-Trans closures from 11am til 6 am.

405 fwy traffic is crap and always bumper to bumper. Even non fwy regular streets are crap in the afternoon starting around 2pm. I used to get caught in traffic just driving to Starbucks. It is a pain just to get OUT of the small shopping complex where they have Starbucks, because traffic on the main street is so backed up, everyone is a bad mood and a lot of people just don't let you pass....

Its horrible. Basically, you need 1 hour to get anywhere 20 minutes away. I recommend traveling between the hours of 1am - 4am. Any other hours and you will encounter sluggish traffic.

traffic was horrible, I started driving at about 2:30pm

Manhattan is worse because of grid lock - we just get parking lot conditions on the freeways, the side streets aren't so bad. It's just that out here anywhere you want to go involves 3 freeways!

You take the 5 to the 101 to the 110 etc. etc.

I used to have to drive the 405 from the Valley to LAX area at 2am, 3-4 nights a week... about 50% of the time it was bumper to bumper for a good chunk of the drive... at 2am... used to really boggle my mind... yesterday, it took me an hour to do 6 miles round trip along Sepulveda at 9pm... yeah the traffic here sucks ass.

I'm coming from the Valley so I take the 118 East to the 210. I then take the 210 all the way to the 15. Hop on the 15 south for like 2 miles, then hit the 10 east all the way to Palm Springs.

I miss the majority of bullshit traffic on the 10 this way.

Before the 210 was opened up all the way to the 15, I used to have to take the 57 south to pick up the 10. I would end up having to drive through Pomona and Montclair and by the Ontario Airport. Talk about gridlock. The new way (which I described above) shaved a good 30 minutes off my drive to Palm Springs.
