How many have made the switch to Voice over IP?

We picked up a pair of Cisco IP Phone 7960 Series phones yesterday, definitely cool little gadgets. I'm in the process of adding incoming lines in several area codes for local advertising vs 800# advertising. The quality is amazingly crystal considering it's all done over the net.

For a few reasons I will never get rid of my non cordless landline.
So I am more than happy paying flatrate with the phone company for unlimited long distance in the US and super cheap in countries I designate. Besides all out of the US calls are business related anyways and that is just another rightoff I can use.

I believe they are called that.

I'll wait a few more years for wireless to develop securely.

I think they have problems with 911 as well, so when you have a heart attack, good luck getting an ambulance :/

We have VOIP phone service. It's uber cheap.

My only beef with it is the cable internet goes out here from time to time and when it does then we lose our phone service.
Same thing with power outtages etc.

We have cell phones just in case, but still, it's an annoyance.

I made the switch a couple of months ago and am saving about $200 on my phone bills monthly.

I kept the regular landline for convenience only with strictly the basic plan.

The good thing about our VoIP is that we didn't have to buy special phones. We just used the phones we already had. Having unlimited local, long distance in the US and Canada is great.

I made the switch to VoIP over a year ago (February 2004) and the price has kept going down. For $29.95 CDN a month, I get a phone line, voice mail, caller ID, call waiting, unlimited long distance in Canada and the US and a few other great little goodies. No setup fees, no connections fees, no system charges. It's great.

911 service isn't a problem as long as you make sure your carrier has your correct address on file. The only time a problem will arise is if you move your phone to another location without notifying your carrier (since most VoIP lines are portable). For example, my home is in Montreal. If I fly out to Vegas, hook my VoIP line into a condo I'm renting for a month and call 911, the ambulance will be sent to my place in Montreal unless I'm able to communicate my current address.

I love my Vonage. $25 a month and it saves me AT LEAST $100 a month on my Cingular bill.

Sprint are fucking bastards. I loathe Sprint. Call them and bitch. You'll almost always have to get rude with those fuckers to get any action out of them. Just hope you get to talk to someone in North America instead of getting bumped over to their Indian support techs.

I'm not replacing anything, I'm adding phone numbers in different area codes without the costs from the telco. Major savings and I can even forward the calls to my landline if I so desire.

What benfits does that phone offer over getting a gateway from a VoIP provider and plugging a regular telephone into it? Or plugging the gateway into your NID box and plugging regular phones into your jacks?

Same here. I consider a landline as a lifeline, something that should be working under all conditions (ie: power outages, bad weather, etc. etc.). If internet connectivity could have the same kind of uptime as my phone line, I would switch, but I don't see that happening for at least 5+ years.

Still kept a landline for backup, but just got Vonage VoIP and a Vonage VoIP dedicated fax line.

Works great and all the features plus unlimited calling for only $49.95/mo! Strongly recommend http://www.Vonage.com

I just got hooked up with Vonage and it's working great and they provided me with a temporary number while my old one is being transfered. Unfortunately the transfer can take a few weeks...

HAH!! That's funny.

Did they institute new laws to protect bank tellers from the "threat" of ATM's too?

(Oh wait, bank tellers don't make large campaign contributions.....nevermind)

That's one of the funniest things I ever remember seeing.

Bank tellers walking customers on how to use ATM's.

I can only imagine what they must have been thinking while they were doing it. "Please let me show you how to use the machine that's going to help eliminate my job".
