TShirtHell.com removes Worse Than Hell category

Internet's most visited t-shirt company, T-Shirt Hell, removes most offensive shirts - Apologizes.
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 2005?Las Vegas based internet company T-Shirt Hell.com used to be home to the most offensive t-shirts on the internet. With shirts that made light of everything from 9/11, to School Shootings, to the recent Tsunami; T-Shirt Hell truly lived up to its name.

But as of today, that?s no longer true. Founder, Owner, and President Aaron Schwarz has decided to take down the most offensive shirts in his inventory. In fact, he?s removed the entire ?Worse Than Hell? category from his website.

?It was always my goal to make outrageous t-shirts.? said Schwarz. ?It was always my intention to make people laugh. But a lot of people were needlessly hurt and upset by the shirts on our website, and for that I want to apologize. Schwarz is ready to put his money where his mouth is. This year he is looking to donate up to 30% of his profits to charities that are involved with the groups, and events he used to make fun of, if they will accept them.

When asked where he goes from here, Schwarz was optimistic. ?Worse Than Hell? comprised less than 20% of our shirts. We still have plenty of insane, dirty, twisted shirts that you won?t find in the local mall. As for our loyal fans, I hope they?ll continue to be just that: loyal.

I started this web site on my terms and will continue to run it as I see fit. Removing shirts that affect many people in a negative way is just not exciting to me anymore and that doesn?t make me lame or a sell out. It would only be a sell out if I sold shirts that I no longer agreed with just to make a profit. It would be lame to let someone else tell me how to run my business. I still have a great team. We still have the best artists, and the most talented writers, and we will continue to make the most kick ass t-shirts around.

i seriously doubt many people actually bought those shirts...i loved reading them, and I am as offensive as the next asshole, but I would NEVER wear a shirt that say "arrest black babies, before they become criminals" down the streets of atlanta

I was thinking along the same lines, perhaps the sales dont warrant keeping them any longer. He has the notoriety because of it, but makes his money selling the more acceptable shirts

Franck / Battus actually wore it in Phoenix to the Phoenix Forum....I know he thought he was just super cool....I was just waiting for him to experience a bit of "American" culture stepping outside the Hotel and being seen by the right person.

They still have great shirts for sale.

Does anyone remember when they started out? I first saw them on ebay and back then it was all black shirts with plain white letters. They have improved a ton.

99.9% of their shit was unoriginal, sophmoric drivel that appealed to unoriginal, sophmoric webmasters.
I have not found one of their shirts funny...ever.

I don't think it was the sales of those shirts themselves that made the dollars. Simply having them on the site was the money maker. It kept people talking about the site and linking to it. Take away those shirts and unless major $'s are spent advertising to keep the branding going the site will start to fade.

Gotta agree about wearing them though for the most part, although I'd wear the pope one.

it seemed like they were scamming design work by putting up ads on Monster.com last month and in March, having people apply for the job (lead designer) and do test projects for them, and then when they would get the work (exactly as they had asked for) they told everyone they werent the right person for the job. I know this because I applied along with three other designers I know. Who knows, maybe they didnt like our names or something else, but it felt pretty fishy to me.

Those shirts will be back. They love the controversy.
What would get more controversy? Pulling the shirts for good or pulling the shirts for a while and then putting them back out? Their traffic hit nearly record levels when this news came out. You can bet that people still found something to buy on the front page. These guys aren't dumb...

Here is the newsletter they sent out a few days before they pulled the Worse Than Hell category. Read this and then decide if you think they really pulled it out of the goodness of their heart or they did it for the money.
