Ok for small web graphics, such as table backgrounds, labels etc. What graphic imaging software do you preffer & why?

I use both. Photoshop is great for what you are looking to do, but Fireworks will do all of it too, and is cheaper. I prefer Fireworks for image slicing and javascript rollovers, its a breeze while Photoshop (Imageready) has a few file saving bugs and has a few extra steps in it to get what you want.

My 2 cents.

I prefer to work in Fireworks. All the power of Photoshop, without all the hassle. Plus it integrates with other Macromedia products like Dreamweaver & Flash much easier. Photoshop is cool too..... I just prefer Fireworks.

Fireworks!!! It's easier to slice and export imagemaps. Plus it's connected to FLASH and Dreamweaver. You won't regret!!!
