I had one in a shoe box for 2 days last week. It finally got better and flew off. I locked my cat up before I let it go.

I frequently do, although small animals often die of shock. Human intervention accelerates this in many cases.

All depends on what kind of bird and the extent of injury. Usualy not much can be done.
