Hate to break it to you but ALL hard drives are created equal now. Just different specs and sizes. Maxtor is no better than IBM, WD and vise versa. They're all using the same damn circuits, components and such just rebranded.

I've had the same 20g maxtor now for almost 6 years.... no physical problems at all. I've also got a 1.6 gig bigfoot that is close to ten years old with no issues and people used to claim that bigfoot drives were junk too.

They're all the same man.

You guys need to monitor the dirve's health. There are apps that can monitor the overall health of the drives physical parts. One of which is "Speedfan".

My maxtor is around 80% healthy since the day I got it. That's a good health actually. The WD was 90% at first and now 8 months later it's at 80%. A bit faster if loss of health but it's porbably going to stay at 80 for a few years.

If the drive drops bellow 65% it's time to use the drive for less important work. After 50% send it back for recycling. It's just not trustable.

Back your stuff up people. I cannot stress that enough. I just formatted yesterday and am already back up and running 100% because I kept constant backups of everything on an external 20g drive.

Maxtor drives are shit in my experience. I've had to replace a bunch of them we had at the office. Have had many less problems with other brands.

Yeah, I use speedfan and HD temperature which even forces a HD to stop when it is getting overheated. Problem here was it happened all of a sudden, and the disk is less than 3-4 months old..

I read some very interesting news some years ago.

They, I mean the computer scientest, have developed an amazing, new way of preventing data-losses like this.

They call it BACKUP.

It is amazing. It's new. It doesn't even shave your pps traffic. You should try it!

I've lost a couple Maxtors since the beginning of the year. They were being used as a 2ndary drive. Most of the stuff on them were rarities I can only hope of coming across again

I gave up on having a larger extra drive on the PC. Instead I recently added a DVD recorder that I am primarily using as a data backup device. I figure individual discs may go bad but at least I don't lose everything at once.

We lost a Maxtor external drive recently, and some of the stuff wasn't backed up. I don't know if I'll buy another one. No problems with Seagate (yet).

what temperature was the drive hovering around? For a drive to just fail instantly liek that either takes heat abuse or electrical surges.

My maxtor hovers around 84c which is actually a safe temperature.

I use en external enclosure with my maxtor in it as a "work" drive and temporary backups of important files. Every once in a while I archive it all to DVD medium. My DVD burner was the best purchase I have ever made for my computer.

Before the last hard drive (with the most stuff) failed my PC decided it didn't like CD burners, so I lost everything that wasn't uploaded to my webhost or saved long ago. It's weird because the DVD burner I got works fine and the CD burners I gave away work great for the recipients
