is anything in porn run on microsoft software?
The recent release of .NET made me wonder this.
Prior to working in porn I was an asp/sql server programmer and it seemed like every company's site was run with NT/2000 and either ASP or coldfusion. But I haven't seen 1 asp site in the adult world, only php or perl. just an observation. Can m$ just not handle the load -no pun intended :P |

Clay be thankful you are an asp programmer and a php programmer to boot and this is why...
The industry is going to come to a split here soon...a decision is going to be made to either go the .NET route or UNIX...either way allot of the apps that are out there are going to have to be re-written or built from scratch...now if companies decide to go the MS route, they are going to have to rebuild all their servers from NT4 to AS2000...hence the companies will be spending a but load for licenses etc...now comes the hiring of .NET folks..there are not many out there so they will be wanting top dollar... Now if a MS environment company decides to go the UNIX route...the apps that where once written in asp will have to be converted to php...this is where you would come in...there are allot of asp programmers out there but folks that know both asp and php are limited...I say this because in the last couple of jobs I have had...I would say I know about 30 top asp programmers...3 of them including myself know both...therefore we too will be a highly sought after commodity ![]() just my .02 |

![]() haven't picked up php because I haven't needed to, but I really think I should. It'd be nice to write my own scripts instead of paying someone else for theirs. just for fun I went to dice.com and did a search for php and that brought up 60 results (ug!), a search for asp brought over 800. Still not good a few years ago a search for asp would have brought over 8,000. man this is some recession. |

Well I will have to say..that it will never be like it was...you know what I mean the phone ringing off the hook...companies willing to shell out mad money to get a frontpage hack in the door because he/she said they had "SEEN" the web before hehehe...but it will pick up again...it is just going to take a little time is all

Mass people wont change to MicroShit servers. Most adult companies would have to double if not tripple the server load to handle what one BSD box can. I-bill is on MS and look at all the damn problems, companies like SexTracker, Us, and most others are on some type of UNIX OS with almost zero problems. Unix can handle more load than any MS product and that is a proven fact. Even MS/Hotmail runs UNIX, let's ya know that their own product sux ass.

er.. not exactly, but I do give credence to your point. PHP is great for a lot of the stuff porn does, but it starts to suffer when it scales. This is not to say a talented PHP programmer can't make site based off PHP scale well, it's just harder and it will never do as well as some things. Probably the creme of the crop in the Unix world for "extreme" performance stuff, is Apache+Mod_Perl. Think of mod_perl a lot like ASP in that the interpreter is allready loaded. Some hugeass corporate sites run mod_perl. The problem here is that there are *VERY* few decent programmers than can do modperl worth a shit, so it almost always gets looked over either from an expense standpoint, or no one knows about it. ![]() In the corporate world though, on the unix side you'll see a hell of a lot more Solaris on Sun hardware, running iPlanet and some form of java servlets, or whatnot. Don't ask me why, it's beyond stupid for most things, but that's "how it's done". I for one, would love to see a migration in the corporate sector to PHP/perl/etc. on *bsd or hell, anything that runs apache. It would mean a hell of a lot better job stability for me. Theres not many places needing a linux+apache admin, who can code perl on the side anymore. ![]() Oh well, my point is I don't really see a lot of corps. dumping ASP for PHP, even if they do move to Unix. It would probably be more along the lines of asinine iPlanet/Jserv crap like so many allready do. -Phil |

I use this rule:
-If you own your server: If you need easy password authentication: Unix/Apache If you need image protection: Unix If you are poor: Unix/Apache (I have done image protection in Windows, but is a pain in the ass) If you need free email: Windows/IIS 5 If you need huge fast stable databases but no image protection: Windows/IIS 5 -If you do not own your server: Unix/Apache When I say unix I do not mean cobalt for some cobalt have an htaccess vulnerability that will left Apache crippled, this will affect the server´s owner probably more then your site though. Sorry cobalt lovers. OK, you can attack me now. ------------------ Perl Hacker gone bad. |

Maybe that's part of the reason why all the non adult companies can't make any money, their websites run on windows
