The LOTR trilogy is the best series of films ever made - there's no bandwagon about it. Then again, I had read the books many times before the movies ever existed & was a huge fan.

I skipped Harry Potter completely - it just seemed to be aimed towards kids.

trend whore????

Thats about the most ridiculous thing i've heard all day outside alex and his "killer weed".

LOTR is 80 years old and i, like anyone else not just out of highschool first read it 15+ years ago, i don't think it was ever trendy to go see it, just a massive fanbase from the strength of the writing, I find it quite ignorant to call it a trend when it's one of the most popular boks in existance over such a long time.

Harry Potter might be for kids for sure, but the writing is great and harkens back to the stuff i read as a kid like the magic faraway tree, famous five etc. The books will remain classics of the genre, not some manufactured marketing trend.

They succeed because of the strength of the story telling, that such a large marketing engine has been built around both books says FAR MORE about the age in which we live in than in the books themselves, both of which were phenomenons based on quality before hollywood came knocking.

Another thing is Star Wars wouldn't even exist without LOTR - even George Lucas admits this - so you have it ass-backwards

I just fail to see any rational point in not watching them other than some pseudo-superiority anti-for-the-sake-of-it knee jerk reaction.

It's like a new resturant opening in town and everyone says they have the tastiest dish ever.. Why the fuck aren't i going to at least try it once? I was going to go out and eat at a new resturant anyways.. What point is there in potentionally depriving myself of the pleasure? except the pleasure of deriding everyone else as fools because it's a chain resturant and a million people like the dish so by not wanting to try it your palate is obviously too refined for the reason that so many people like it.

Unless the fantasy genre just really isn't your thing.. which is fine, thats just a matter of taste, some people don't like horror or kung fu etc etc.
Anyways i would suggest reading the books over or at least before the movies regardless.

I have not seen even one Harry P0tter film.

However, LOTR trilogy is basically monumental, huge, incredible. There are no words really to describe it. To sit there and scoff at something that amazing without having even seen it is incredibly presumptuous if not downright boneheaded.

LOTR's is about as fine an example that exists of a film at least coming close to doing justice to the story that the book put forth. It deserved every award it's won so far, believe me.

Sure, I don't care either... My point is that if I became a great fan and wanted to speak to someone about it, I'd have to associate with grade schoolers.

I really can't see any quality about the harry potter things, all seems like your basic story and fantasy crap to me.

LOTR was a brilliant book, and the movie(s) probably outdoes it.

Let me guess, you must be one of those gothic sub-culture types that don't like anything mainstream.

You're calling Lord of the Rings a "cult" film?

You obviously have no clue what you're talking about. A prime example of a film with a cult following is The Warriors. Happens to be one of my favorite films of all time, but it certainly embodies the definition of what a "cult" film is.

Lord of the Rings on the other hand, is about as far from a cult film as it gets.

The term "blockbuster" is much more fitting.

I'm not saying the potter is on the same level as LOTR, just that it's a series that lives up to the hype, because it was already a word of mouth phenomenon before the marketeers got involved. There are also many "real" writers that have praised the quality of her work. She really is in the Blyton league of writers.

Also I wouldn't exactly say the potter movies are of the same quality as the LOTR trilogy. You really need to read the books.
As far as associating with gradeschoolers.. my girl got me onto the books and it's not as if i talk about i heart huckabees or eternal sunshine of the spotless mind with anyone so why do i care if other fans are kids instead of arthouse wankers i wouldn't want to talk to anyways.
