crotch rocket motorcycle riders - need your opinion

what do you think about a kawasaki ninja 500 for a starter bike? ive been looking at used bikes for my first bike for a while. i want something slow and cheap to start out on until im experienced then i will upgrade. i just want something to ride for fun. not really interested in doing 150 on the freeway or doing wheelies down the road.

Its a good bike, but you'll outgrow it quickly. A Kawasaki ZX6E or ZZR600 (which are the same bike 1994 to 2004, dont get the 05) is an excellant bike that you could learn on, then continue to ride. Its moderately fast when you want it to be, and very comfortable to ride. And its not expensive either.

Thats my ZX6E on the right, its an 02 model, had 3300 miles on it.. picked it up for $4800

and here is one on Craig's list for $1700
http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/mcy/70286543.html

You can find good deals on them, and they are excellant bikes

Get a 600 dude, you'll be used the style of riding too when you upgrade(if). All the 600's these days rip pretty good. I personally like the bigger bikes, but have been riding for days too. The Ninja 500 is a good first bike but so are the 600's. They ride different cause there more sport style as opposed to the cruiser(more upright) handle bar positioning of the 500cc class. Get the new 6r..killer bike & fantastic new styling..killer rear end too now..love it. I ride Yamaha personally...have fun, either way, you can't go wrong!

while I agree with the comment on the 500, i cant agree about the v-twin 600s.

I have a Honda Hawk GT, its a 647cc v-twin and its a blast to ride. (its also for sale)

The Suzuki SV650 is alot of fun also

100% agree

I had a Suzuki Katana and I quickly outgrew that bike (within a month). Problem is with the 500's and such are that they are hard to sell because only beginneers want them. I would highly suggest a R6 or F4i as a starter bike... Once you get used to the bike you can always get it jetted or get new pipes and such to get more horsepower out of it.

You're not a big guy Beemk (no offence) so you don't need a 750 or 1000 to go super fast. Alot of 600's can kill larger bikes in the corners and the only thing the higher cc bikes will do is kill you in a straight line drag race.

All depends on what you want to do

DH

The issue here is not about money. Forget the 600 for a beginner. He needs something he can drop a couple of times and not care because he only spent 3k instead of 6k. Understand?

For the $2400 he is spending he can get a good used 600, have more bike and still not be concerned that he dropped it

but, an even better beginner bike would be my honda hawk
no body work to tear up if you drop it.

exactly.

if you like Ninjas and can handle them well and FEEL COMFORTABLE HANDLING IT (thats the most important thing) then, get a used Ninja...maybe one that is a little scratch here and there.

i started out (practicing) on an old Kawaski then was taught how to ride a Triumph Speed Triple by a friend of mine but that bike had too much power for my beginner skills LOL

Although I love Hondas for a first bike I would recommend a Suzuki Bandit. Its the easiest bike I ever rode, their fast as as hell, great for learning wheelies, and you can find a used one in good condition for under $3000. I now have a year old CBR1100XX, a few years ago it was the fastest bike made but the Bandit was a lot more fun to ride.

good choice, reliable bike, and used ones are cheap. check ebay.

also the smaller displacement sportbikes (under 600cc) usually are not trashed so hard on the used market---many times they are ridden by older guys or women. you should not buy this bike if you are a big or heavy person, it will feel too small for you.

and then when you get some miles under your belt get a hayabusa.

take the motorcycle safety course, understand and practice counter-steering, hanging off, and panic braking.

and remember, don't scrimp on protection---get the best helmet you can afford---the 50 dollar helmet is only for the 50 dollar head.

now be careful and go have fun.

yes, for the price the bandit is a terrifc value. the ONLY reason they are cheap is because they are soft on the market due to being upstaged by the hayabusa.

Some time ago Steve Lightspeed made a deal with his staff - double sales, and he'll buy us each a motorcycle. (Thanks Steve!)

Steve and Tanker went out and bought some fast bikes. Me, who had years of riding bike under my belt, opted out for a smaller bike - In fact, a 500cc Ninja. I didn't feel the need for anything bigger myself, and was more interested in saving some money at the time (we were in the process of buying a house).

So I rode my little bike, and I had problems keeping up with Steve and Tanker. Back then we rode often. However, it was fast enough. Once my wife and I moved into our house, I upgraded to an Honda CBRxx1100 (which now destroys both Steve and Tanker's bikes!).

Tanker eventually sold his bike, and Steve refuses to ride with me because he's pissed off that my bike is faster than his. I still ride my Honda often and love every moment of it. It's a BIG bike however.

Buy what your comfortable with. If this is your first bike and you'll have the money to buy another later, get the 500cc. It's dangerous enough on it's own if your new to motorcycles. And if you new to bikes - take a fucking rider safety course.

Here's my bike last month outside the Lightspeed studio:

My first (and current) bike is a 2004 Suzuki GSX-R 600. It's plenty fast enough without lifting the front wheel under power, it handles great, and it's pretty.

I dont ever recall a Ninja 500. I knew that they had a 250 a 600, a 750, a 1000 and an 1100, but I dont remember a 500. But anyway. Think Europe, and get a Bimota

It used to be called the EX500, and they renamed it the 500 Ninja. I looked at them, but I didn't like the way they looked and sounded.

BTW, they also had a 900 and a 1200.

Damn I am out of touch. I had the 750, and love the hell out of it. But I like the bimoda much better. That damn thing is lightening fast. The one I put above is a 500 and will do I think 150. Built great, and a great size.

Dude,

Get a 600... you will get more respect and not outgrow it as fast.

Respect!

yea I know your not going to be trying wheelies and tricks, so I would say get a 600 because I don't think you will drop it as much. You'll baby that thing which will be good.

A 600 is perfect just take it easy until you get used to it, if you decide to road race the 600 class is about as fun as you can get
