How much revenue is lost to hacked password sites?

I know alot of people who get free porn by using hacked passwords that they find on the internet.

I dont do this for two reasons......

1. it is easier and quicker for me to pay to join the sites I like than to search for a free password

2. I have actually read some of the terms and conditions on porn sites and the penalties for password sharing scare the hell out of me.

Questions..........how much revenue is estimated to be lost and how many people are prosecuted and/or hit with lawsuits?

I think it would be pretty easy to track down the sites that share the passwords.

I remember reading once that Ron Levi said he wasn't concerned with password sharing. Is this the typical sentiment?

I will not bother to call you a surfer and such. Your questions are fairly good for a discussion.
As for lawsuits, somewhere between zip and nadda.
Revenue lost, a whole shit load to the paysite owners, on the flip side a whole lot gained for the site owners hosts. Yet the sad fact is most people will not spend the extra hundred or so bucks to protect their site, yet will pay the extra bandwidth bills and possible lost membership revenue not to mention the content saturation.

Thanks for the reply Lord of the Fungi.

Granted I am a surfer but I have been a follower of this business for many years. I am fascinated by the opportunities and innovation. I just wish it was 1995 because I feel like I missed out on the gold rush.

JJ Gold,

1) What sites do you frequently visit or bookmark?
2) What do you feel about sites like http://www.8teenporn.com/ where certain clicks go to another site rather than a gallery with pictures? Does that annoy you or do you think "great, more free porn!"?

Also, what do you feel about sites that protect their media with DRM?

I think the question should be how much revenue is lost due to members' areas not being properly protected.

Oh yeah, and fuck off, surfer.

Fireorange........I don't really hunt for "free porn" as much as I hunt for content that turns me on. When I see something I like I buy it. I guess I am fortunate because I have alot of disposable income. I work at home from the computer and porn is a big part of my day. When I need a break, I surf, and hope I find something new and exciting.

As far as protected content it doesn't bother me since I usually just get off and move on to something new.

Yeah, that was a good one, hot shot.

Frogs are from France. The slur for French Canadians is "pepper". I'm an anglophone, however.

All that is lost is bandwidth..
The people surfing for free passwords are incredibly unlikely to actually PAY for porn...
as for proxypass, pennywise, those aren't infallible either... to REALLY protect your site, you need to make it a pain in the ass for your customers as well..
EG: GD confirmations, randomly generated names and passwords, blah blah blah..

Almost NONE!

i dont understand why people seem to think that people who go through so much trouble to get free access to something would otherwise willingly pay for it.

its just like pirated software. just because some guy in moscow or thailand or china or wherever, uses a pirated copy of PhotoShop it does not mean he would have paid for it anyway.

A couple of valid passes floating at a single small to medium password forum can send your bandwidth up 5-10mbps for some time if left unchecked. Stay running at 10mbps+ as give away and see how much it costs the paysite owner. This is of course in the days of .20 or less bandwidth charges. Several years ago it was worse since bandwidth was in the 4-8.00 range.

I understand your point Pleasurepays but I dont think it is a zero sum game. Alot of people use P2P networks to get music but they also buy CDs of artists who go to great lengths to protect their content. The Velvet Revolver album is a good example.

Imagine, if you will, a world where pirated software was unavailable. Everyone would have to pay for their software. Therefore, the existance of pirated software equates to lost revenues.

Same idea for porn, not to mention the bandwith costs.

Microsoft's Palladium should/would in my opinion slow down P2P/warez which is a bigger problem than password sharing....

Stolen passwords are a nuisance and people doing that can slow down the surfing experience for all the legit paying members on the site for a while, but most sites have protections which prevent it from getting too bad.

ok John Lennon.

thats why i said "almost" - of course some revenue is lost. BUT ... the important question in these types of debates is "how much?" and how do you calculate "lost revenues"?

the issue of pirated software is similar to this question and it annoys me to no end when i see people like Bill Gates talking about billions lost to piracy. all i am saying is that 6000 pirated copies of photoshop in China for example, does not equate to 6000 lost sales as people claim it does. if you make photoshop unnavailable in Russia for 2$... what is going to happen? for the most part, people with 300$ a month incomes are not going to spend $600.00 for a single piece of software. all i am saying is that just because they have it... does not mean they are going to willingly pay for it if it were not available for free.

password sites are a similar analogy in my opinion. if someone is so set against paying for something... why is it logical to assume they would otherwise be willing customers?

A software solution like StrongBox and paying attention to your logs and server stats saves a lot of headaches when you suspect password trading/posting/sharing/compromising/eic. is going on.

Yeah, so what I was saying was that to some it may amount to a lot of money in bandwith and headaches, but for some who are aware and pro-active it's not that bad considering the potential.
