My dog just brought in a baby rabbit...[pics]

What am I supposed to do now?!?! My dog came over with this little guy in his teeth. He's still alive but his eyes aren't opened yet. I'm going to run to the store to get some food for it and try to nurse it back to health.

Anyone ever do this before? It looks like its no more than a day old and it doesn't look like my dog did any real damage to it. I looked all around and couldn't find the mother.

I named him Bugs.

get some goats milk from the pet store and a feeder bottle with a narrow tip. Keep it warm and feed it about 3 times a day. I raised my flying squirrel the same way when hurricane ivan knocked him out of a tree.

Google is your friend. Good luck with the little guy

From that site (first one i found in google):

"How Do I Know If the Baby Bunnies Need Help?
Very young wild baby bunnies with eyes closed and ears back rarely survive in captivity, even given the most expert human care; and so it is very important to determine whether they really need help. Try to assess whether the infants seem warm and healthy or cold, thin, and dehydrated. One test for dehydration is to gently pinch the loose skin at the back of the neck. If it stays in a "tent," or does not spring back in one second, the bunny is SEVERELY dehydrated and needs rehabilitation IMMEDIATELY by a professional rabbit vet or rehabber. Another test is to stroke the genital area to stimulate elimination. If the pee is brown and gritty, the mother rabbit has not been there to help the bunnies urinate. The brown, gritty urine is toxic, and the infant bunny must be cared for by a professional. Please contact a Wildlife Rehabilitator or rabbit vet immediately.

Older baby bunnies who are found outside of the nest may not be orphaned or in need of assistance. Baby cottontails are born without fur but develop a full coat in a week. Their eyes open in 10 days, and in three to four weeks they are weaned. At this age, they may explore the world outside of the nest but return there to sleep. They are not ignored by the mother but stay with the family group until four or five weeks of age. To determine whether a bunny of this age needs assistance, perform the dehydration test. Also look for bleeding, convulsing, fly larvae, broken limbs; if any, get to a rabbit vet or emergency vet immediately. If he is just out and about, leave him be. He is discovering his world, waiting for mom to return at night when we humans are asleep"

you gonna have to feed it 4 times a day with a bottle... no fun. I had to do it with cats 2 times. 1 by itself died. Another time there were 4 they all lived (i kept one and its a fat ass 13 year old lol).

Damn. That is cool. take care of him. I had one as a kid. You can never get the wild out of him, but it is neet to have him in the back yard all the time.

do what you can for today, and call the local vet on Monday, he should be able to give you some information on how to care for it.

Looks more like a puppy to me. I think your dog has been doing the freaky freaky behind your back. ;)

If it is rabbit, good luck with raising it.

It does look alot like a puppy. look at the width of its head. baby rabbits have narrow faces, this thing has a wide snout.

I dont think it is a puppy.

The printer it is pictured next to is the same model we have and thats not big enough to b a puppy... 'perspective' - the close ups are making it look MUCH bigger than it actually is, in reality, that critter is probably no larger than a box of smokes

Lee

Could easily fit into a box of smokes. It's not that big at all.

Many baby critters can't pee/poo on their own. Their mother has to stimulate it by licking its genitals to make it go. Without this, their "waste" stays in their system and will kill the baby.
A warm washcloth usually does the trick.

I had baby rabbits, they're a lot of work. If you have an eye dropper, get some warm milk and put some in there and try to put it up to its mouth to feed it. The bunnies eyes won't be open for a few days and he's as good as blind for now so you need to get something to feed it some milk.

Also, do get a warm wet cloth to wrap it in, and make sure you change it every few hours.

I had a bunny overpopulation problem when I put the male and female together in the same cage. Those mother rabbits are nuts, she ate her own children! Had to seperate the kids from the mother after she ate like 2 of her own. It was really weird. But yeah, I used to love having little bunny rabbits, they're cute as hell

My girlfriend called her vet (she shows horses and we have a couple of them here at the house so he makes regular visits). The vet said pretty much what was outlined here and also informed us that there is a really a very slim chance of it surviving.

I will do everything I can to doctor it but I'm certainly not a miracle worker. I will certainly keep everyone posted. I have already gotten attached to the little guy.

I bought some milk and a feeding bottle with a long nipple and got him to eat. That's a step in a positive direction.
