Wow! What a "show and tell" party. JVC and Sony's new HD cameras that shoot 1080i were everywhere. The only disappointment is that they don't shoot a width of 1920 so you can't get a true 16x9 aspect ratio at 1080. The camera uses a trick of using 1440 rectangular pixels which stretch the difference. Sony's camera had a fixed lense which also lessened your options.....but, the lense was a very nice Zeiss zoom which compensated rather nicely. All and all, it produced a very sweet image at a $4700 pricetag.

I also found a number of definitions for the use of the "HD" term. I finally understood that HD means "one pixel greater than PAL" as one tech told me. The format wars are raging for the final version of the HD standard. It is all up in the air at this time....even the Chinese have their own version!

The NLEs were all there in force showing the latest techniques and plugins. I saw some really fine hardware as well such a Martox's Axio rendering card. I was somewhat let down when the Martox rep told me that the card was recommended for use with HP and not Dell workstations...... But, there is hope that Dells will be "certified" in the near future. Damn, the paperwork and politics always gets in the way of true progress.

I bought a cheap animation program called Animation Master for under $200 which looks fun and promising. I can't wait to add some animation to my videos with the girls...... Watch out, Mr. Disney!!

Lots of cool t-shirts were given out by companies hawking everything from FM radio tranmission towers to decked out buses with all the latest digital camera and editing consoles. Too radical to describe. I wish you could have seen them as they were among the greatest recording studios imaginable on wheels......all you needed was a bed, some lube, a set of Sport Sheets, and a couple of blondes...

A lot of companies were selling set lighting, camera booms, tripods, remote camera systems, wireless systems for video and mic transmission, and royalty-free content and music.

The FCC had a booth and were giving out info on their Indenency cleanup. I was encouraged by the broadcasters organizing the "National Freedom of Speech Week" from October 17-23. Kudos guys! I'm glad to see them start to get organized and speak out against the censorship they are facing.

Anyways, I really learned a lot and think the information I gained was well worth every penny I spent on the trip. I'm already making my plans for next year.
